Cockroach infestations force Sacramento doughnut shop and Mexican restaurant to close

Here is a roundup of restaurants in Sacramento County with a yellow or red violation in the past week, according to the Sacramento County Environmental Management Department.

A yellow placard signals two or more major violations and red placards require a restaurant to immediately close “due to imminent danger to public health,” according to the Sacramento County Food Inspection Guide.

Vermin or animal contamination is grounds for a red placard and suspends health permits ffor the business until the violations are corrected. Green means a restaurant passed the inspection.

The county conducts roughly 14,000 inspections a year, and 97% of all restaurants pass their inspections, Ken Casparis, a spokesman, previously told The Bee.

Here are inspections for Oct. 1 through Oct. 5. (closure updates from over the weekend are included):

Cockroaches found at Mexican grill and doughnut shop

El Fuego Express Mexican Grill, at 1225 J St., Mansion Flats, had five violations on Oct. 5.

Major violations for the Mexican restaurant included 21 live adult German cockroaches and 30 dead cockroaches.

According to the Oct. 5 inspection, all 30 dead cockroaches were found in the back of a stand-up cooler and ice machine.

As of Oct. 6 the restaurant has reopened. A Friday report states the restaurant had “professional pest control services on Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.

“There was nothing serious,” said Carlos Davila, the restaurant manager, on Monday morning. “We had recently bought a fridge that had a couple insects in there, but we took it out got it reinspected the next day and we are back open.”

Eric’s Donuts at 5669 Mack Road, Parkway, had 12 violations on Oct. 4.

Major violations included at least 22 live German cockroaches and one dead.

According to the Oct. 4 report, five live cockroaches were observed crawling on the wall and then hid in ceiling crevices.

The doughnut shop had a reinspection on Oct. 7 but remains closed.

The Bee contacted Eric’s Donuts for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

Both businesses can re-open once they pass re-inspection. Both were closed as of Friday afternoon.

Yellow Placard Violations

The following restaurants had violations the week of Oct. 1 to Oct. 5 resulting in a conditional pass. Only the dates of violations are listed. Charley’s Philly Steaks, 1689 Arden Way, in Arden Fair mall, had nine violations on Oct. 2.

Toledos Mexican Market, 1341 Fulton Ave., Arden Arcade, had 16 violations on Oct. 2.

Wa-Me Restaurant, 9437 Madison Ave., Orangevale, had four violations on Oct. 3.

Ristorante Piatti, 571 Pavillions Lane, Arden Arcade, had 14 violations on Oct. 3.

Mayahuel, 1200 K St., downtown, had seven violations on Oct. 3.

Chason’s Crab Stadium, 8839 Sheldon Road, Elk Grove, had 17 violation on Oct. 3.

Kodaiko Ramen and Bar, 718 K St., downtown, had six violations on Oct. 3.

Taco Twist, 8359 Elk Grove Florin Road, Vineyard, had 13 violation on Oct. 5.

Double Tree by Hilton Hotel, 2001 Point West Way, Point West, had 10 violations on Oct. 5.

Hidden Dumpling House, 2801 P St., Winn Park, had one violation on Oct. 5, following multiple violations the day before.

Yolanda’s Tamale Factory, 6885 Luther Drive, south Sacramento, had seven violations on Oct. 5.
