Cockroaches, rodent droppings and ‘slime’: Latest Sacramento County restaurant inspections

Health inspectors closed a downtown Sacramento cocktail bar after discovering cockroaches, rodent droppings and “heavy slime mold accumulation,” according to an inspection report.’

Eight other businesses in the Sacramento area received conditional placards.

A yellow placard signals two or more major violations, according to the Sacramento County Food Inspection Guide. These are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection.

A red placard signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends the health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination.

Green means a restaurant passed the inspection.

The county conducts roughly 14,000 inspections a year, and 97% of all restaurants pass their inspections, Ken Casparis, a spokesman, previously told The Bee. About 1% of inspections result in a closure.

The Elverta Elementary School cafeteria was shutdown last week, but reopened the following day.

Health inspectors close cocktail bar in downtown Sacramento

Ten Ten Room, 1010 10th St, in Sacramento, had eight violations on Wednesday, according to county health inspectors.

During the inspection, eight live German cockroaches were found “in a small gap under the bar counter top,” according to the report.

A total of seven rodent dropping were also found on Wednesday. Two droppings were found under a three-compartment sink and five droppings were found in the back of a corner basement, according to the report.

Additionally, the floor bar was “unclean” with “heavy slime mold accumulation,” according to the report.

The owners of Ten Ten Room had not returned a request for comment as of Friday morning.

Sacramento County restaurants get yellow placard violations

The following Sacramento County restaurants had violations the week of Nov. 30 through Dec. 6, resulting in a conditional pass.

Only the dates of violations are listed. Most restaurants fully pass reinspection within 72 hours. The reports are linked. For updates on individual restaurants, you can search the EMD website here.

Citrus Plaza Market, 6240 San Juan Ave. in Citrus Heights, had five violations on Tuesday. Major violations included a sink blocked by a cart with sausage and other meats, stated the report. Cabbage, cheese and meat were not stored at appropriate temperatures during the time of the inspection.

The Cliff House of Folsom, 9900 Greenback Lane in Folsom, had eight violation on Tuesday. Foods including chicken, tuna, sausages, lentils and tomatoes were in a broken holding unit that was not at the appropriate temperature. One dead cockroach was found under an ice machine and another was found on the floor under the cash register during the inspection.

Seniore’s Pizza, 8250 Calvine Road in Sacramento, had five violations on Tuesday. Gunk was found on the teeth of the table-mounted can opener, according to the Tuesday report.

The Sawyer Hotel- A Kimpton, 560 J St. in Sacramento, had 15 violations on Tuesday. Dishes were washed in a “high-(temperature) automatic dish machine without any detergent,” according to the inspection report. Accumulated slime was found inside the ceiling and deflector panel of ice machines. There was also accumulated dust that was found on a ceiling surrounding vents on the cook’s line. The same report stated that “old food and grease accumulation” were found on the floor beneath cooking equipment.

Ninja Sushi, 8937 Folsom Blvd. in Sacramento, had 16 violations on Tuesday. Raw shrimp, udon noodles and grilled chicken were stored in improper holding temperatures, according to the Tuesday report. Additionally, “two fillets of raw albacore tuna” were found in an unopened vacuum sealed packaging, stated the report. Old soda machine dispensing nozzles had “old soda syrup build-up,” during the time of inspection. A large styrofoam container that was previously used to transport raw seafood was being used to store clean grates and pans, according to the report.

Shams Market, 3510 Auburn Blvd. in Sacramento, had 16 violations on Monday. The hand-washing station at meat preparation was completely blocked by large trays at the time of inspection. “Dry meat residue” was observed inside the grinder and on the meat slicer, according to the report. A total of four fruit flies were seen at in the bakery prep area and two fruit flies were seen inside the meat prep room.

Pho Xe Lua, 5331 Stockton Blvd. in Sacramento, had nine violations on Monday. Employees were seen not changing their gloves in between “handling raw meat and touching clean utensils,” according to the report. Cooked shrimp, bean sprouts, cut tomatoes and chicken pieces were not stored in proper food temperatures during the time of inspection. Additionally, two adult German cockroaches were found in rear storage areas, according to the report. The restaurant was reinspected on Wednesday, but still received a yellow placard.

Palace Food Service, 2645 Camino Ave. in Sacramento, had 20 violations on Wednesday. Moldy bottles of mayonaisse were seen at the time of inspection in a walk-in refrigerator. A box of plantains and yams was seen on the kitchen floor on Wednesday, according to the report. Old food debris and residue was found in the cook’s line ventilation hood and pink residue was found inside the floor drain by an ice machine, according to the report.
