The piña colada is a vacation cocktail staple, but just how popular has the frosty, tropical drink been this year? Well, according to some new data, the Piña Colada has had quite the summer.

To help suppliers track metrics over time and identify new opportunities from cocktail trends, CGA, an international data and insight consultancy, created the Cocktail Sales Tracker. The data tool is full of insights on seasonality and trends in the cocktail market.

According to the tracker, the piña colada moved from the 17th to 9th most popular cocktail in the U.S. This substantial increase was the biggest jump on the list of top 30 cocktails, making the drink a clear favorite this summer.

Even more interesting is the city where the piña colada has seen the biggest increase in purchases. One might assume it would be a balmy beach town in Florida or a coastal city in California. Not quite. In actuality, New York City saw the biggest jump in piña colada sales this quarter.

Another refreshing favorite, the mojito, muddled its way past the old fashioned to become the 4th most popular cocktail this quarter.

“The changing dynamics of consumer preferences are coming through in the cocktail tracker," said Matthew Crompton, regional director at CGA North America. "The summer presents ample opportunities for beverage suppliers to maximize these shifts in preferred serves to compliment occasions and changes in the weather – and understanding these trends will be key to building a winning cocktail strategy in the On Premise.”
