There are many positive aspects of breastfeeding (just ask Jamie Oliver. *jokes*), but as most nursing mums will testify, there are also a number of trickier aspects to deal with. And new mum Coco Austin has just uncovered one of them…bleeding nipples.

Since welcoming her daughter, Chanel in November, the 37-year-old, who is married to rapper Ice-T, has been excitedly documenting her parenting journey on Instagram. But speaking in a recent interview the new mum has opened up about one of the difficult side-effects she’s faced while breastfeeding her little one.

“They told me breastfeed, breastfeed, breastfeed,” she told People. “They’re like, ‘The first week is hard, but once you make it over that first week, it’s gonna be great.’ In that first week my nipples were bleeding and scabbing over. I was like, “No one tells you that your nipples bleed!’”

It isn’t the first time Coco has spoken about breastfeeding. Just after giving birth to chanel she took to her Facebook page to reveal she was suffering from sore nipples.

"Can I just say though.. My nipples feel like they are gonna fall off they’re so raw from breastfeeding #NewMommyproblems,” she wrote.

Earlier this year, she spoke about how she’s had to learn to multi-task while nursing her daughter.

“I mastered the art of breastfeeding while vacuuming & breastfeeding while curling my hair,” Coco tweeted in January. "#HiddenTalents I got skills! #StrongBiceps.“

And joining the likes of Alyssa Milano she also attempted to ‘normalise’ breastfeeding by posting a picture on Instagram of her breastfeeding her little one while she was strapped into a car seat, which she’s since removed.

"Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do in when feeding time comes up…oh, the trials and tribulations!” she wrote. “Breastfeeding in odd places…I want to start a trend where us moms post pics of all the wild stuff we do for our little ones… #momslife.”

Coco isn’t the only celebrity mum to discuss the realities of breastfeeding.

Earlier this year Kim Kardashian opened up about the subject, revealing that daughter, North “hates it” when she breastfeeds baby brother, Saint.

Kimberley Walsh has also been honest about her breastfeeding struggles admitting that before her baby arrived she thought breastfeeding “would be the easiest thing in the world”, but now knows “it can be quite distressing when it’s not working.”

Una Healey who has two children, Aoife, three, and Tadhg, five months, with husband Ben Foden recently spoke of her own breastfeeding battle. “The day my milk came in I couldn’t get Tadhg to latch on,” she told Hello! magazine. “I had a bit of a meltdown, sobbing, ‘It’s only been three days, I feel like such a failure.’ But I got a breast pump and expressed three ounces. The relief was incredible.”

No doubt some haters will think celebrities talking breastfeeding is TMI, but if it helps any new mum currently wrestling her own breastfeeding demons to feel like she’s not alone, that can only be a good thing. Keep up the good work Coco.
