Coggins, Suffield stay hot

Jan. 27—The game may not have counted towards the NCCC standings, but it was a battle between two of the top teams in the conference when the Suffield High boys basketball team welcomed Windsor Locks Friday night.

Behind the strong play of junior Mike Coggins, the Wildcats earned the win.

Coggins scored 15 points to lead Suffield to a 55-42 win over the Raiders, its sixth in a row.

The teams meet again, this time in conference play, Feb. 17 in Windsor Locks.

The Wildcats (10-3) led 13-12 after a quarter before the Raiders (9-2) came back to take a 27-24 lead into the half. Suffield regained the lead, 38-37, entering the fourth before outscoring the visitors 17-5 over the final eight minutes.

Coggins scored six of his points in the final quarter, including going 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

Quinn Lynam added 14 points in the win, including six in the fourth. Nick Sattan chipped in 12 points while Sam Evans had 11.

Sophomore Sincere Monroe led all scorers with 19 points for Windsor Locks. Malike Alasani added 11 points.

Both teams are on the road Tuesday. Suffield travels to Stafford while the Raiders are at Somers.

BOLTON 52, GRANBY 38. Colby Marsh scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Bulldogs won a NCCC at "The Den" in Granby.

The Bulldogs (6-7) led 9-7 after a quarter before the Bears (1-12) took a 22-21 lead into halftime. Bolton pulled ahead 34-33 entering the fourth and outscored Granby 18-5 in the final eight minutes.

Trevor Buchanan added a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds in the win. The senior is now nine points away from reaching the 1,000 career points.

Ryan Frith led Granby with 12 points.

Bolton entertains Windham Tech Monday.

COVENTRY 54, SOMERS 41. Aidan Hecht scored 13 points as the host Patriots won a NCCC game.

The win assures Coventry (8-5) a berth in the Division V state tournament.

Somers (9-5) led 13-9 after a quarter before the Patriots rallied to take a 20-17 lead into the half. The hosts extended the advantage to 40-32 after three quarters.

Wyatt Wendry added 12 points in the win while Dylan Aloisa had 11. Hecht, Aloisa and Wendry each hit three 3s. Teammate Gavin Covell had nine rebounds.

Troy Maia finished with a game-high 19 points for the Spartans while Cody Ferrero had eight.

Coventry welcomes International Monday while Somers hosts Windsor Locks Tuesday.

CANTON 56, STAFFORD 55. In Canton, Ben Cuniowski and Brandon Powell each scored 19 points as the Warriors won a NCCC game.

It's the sixth win in a row following a four-game losing streak for Canton (8-4), which assured itself a berth in the Division IV state tournament.

The Bulldogs (3-9) trailed 56-55 with 4.6 seconds to play when Tom Balanceau fired a three. The shot missed and teammate Zack Donovan grabbed the rebound, but time ran out before Stafford could get a shot off.

The game was tied 14-14 after a quarter before Stafford grabbed a 31-30 lead at the break. Canton rallied to take a 43-42 edge into the fourth and the teams were deadlocked 13-13 in the final quarter.

Powell went 7-of-11 from the line Friday. Colin Tozier paced the Bulldogs with 13 points while Balanceau had 11, including making three 3s. Donovan and Collin Gudeman each finished with 10 points for Stafford.

The Bulldogs entertain Suffield Tuesday.

EAST CATHOLIC 78, E.O. SMITH 35. Preston Fowler was one of 14 Eagles to score as they won a CCC East game in Storrs.

East Catholic (11-1) is ranked No. 1 in this week's GameTimCT/New Haven Register state media poll and is unbeaten against in-state competition.

Fowler scored eight points in the first quarter as the Eagles built a 23-3 lead after a quarter. The visitors stretched the advantage to 42-17 at the half.

Raymond Rodriguez contributed 12 points in the win while Rob Elliott had 10. Noah Cordone led all scorers with 24 points for E.O. Smith (1-9).

East welcomes Conard Monday.

WINDSOR 87, ROCKY HILL 38. Rashawn Tibby scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Warriors to a CCC North win.

Windsor (12-2), which was ranked No. 5 in this week's GameTimeCT/New Haven Register state media poll, led 19-7 after a quarter and 46-18 at the half.

Anthony Williams added 16 points while Kaiden James had 12 points, five assists and two steals. Jakeel Martin contributed six assists and four steals.

Jaden Veal and Casey Robinson scored eight points apiece to lead the Terriers (2-11).

Windsor travels to Farmington Monday.

CHENEY TECH 77, VINAL TECH 33. In Middletown, Da'mnic Gittens recorded a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds as the Beavers won a CTC game.

Cheney led 17-10 after a quarter and 43-20 at the half before outscoring Vinal Tech (1-10) 23-4 in the third.

Gittens, a junior, added seven assists and five steals to his scoring. Teammate Ayden Brookins added 16 points while J'Roose Orbe had five assists and five steals.

Bryan Pryor led Vinal Tech with 11 points.

Cheney Tech entertains Enfield in a non-league game Wednesday.
