Cohasset native injured in North Dakota shooting that left gunman, officer dead

A Cohasset native was seriously injured in a shooting that left the gunman and one police officer dead and two more officers wounded in Fargo, North Dakota, on Friday.

Karlee Koswick, 25, moved to Fargo three weeks ago to start a new job, relatives told Patriot Ledger media partner WCVB.

Fargo police said Mohamad Barakat, 37, fired multiple rounds at police officers investigating a minor car crash on a busy street July 14.

It’s unclear whether Koswick was involved in the crash, police said.

"I believe she was just in the area, but I can't say for certain at this juncture," said Fargo Police Chief David Zibolski.

Koswick was hit by gunfire in the hip and legs, her family said. She had surgery, and a hospital spokesperson told The Associated Press that she was in fair condition Sunday.

Two officers, Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes, were in critical but stable condition as of Saturday. The third officer, Jake Wallin, died from gunshot wounds.

“There was nothing that could be done" for the 23-year-old military veteran, the chief said. "It's just a really sad tragedy that he's no longer with us.”

Barakat was fatally shot by a fourth officer, Zach Robinson, police said.

The FBI is assisting with the investigation.
