Stamps and coins are issued every year worldwide on various themes. Just from these new publication every year you can educate yourself on a wide variety of topics. The U.S. started issuing prominent American women on quarters to celebrate their accomplishments and contributions. This is a great way to enhance learning since it is Women’s History Month.

Stamps and Coins are filled with rich history. The U.S. postal system was established by the Second Continental Congress on July 26, 1775, with Benjamin Franklin as its first postmaster general. Earlier most of the mails were postpaid, meaning that the postage was paid by the recipient and not by the sender. This method caused a problem as most of the time the recipient did not accept the mail and this in turn caused financial burden to the postal system.

To resolve this conflict, the United Kingdom came out with the first pre-paid stamp on May 1, 1840, called ‘Penny Black’. Then the U.S. issued their first stamp in 1847. Likewise, coins have undergone many changes since the days of cowries and stones.

Several metals and alloys have been tried to come up with a standard specification acceptable throughout the world. The world’s first coins made of electrum, an alloy of gold and silver, were released in Lydia, a kingdom tied to ancient Greece around 600 BC. The first U.S. minted circulating coins were copper cents.
