Cold front coming to Central Indiana. Here's what it means for Indianapolis

A cold front will bring “bitterly” frigid temperatures and single-digit wind chill around Central Indiana for the remainder of the work week, according to the National Weather Service.

Meteorologists say the front from the north will last through Friday and drop temperatures to the low to mid-teens for the next few nights, and high temperatures hovering around the mid-20s during the day.

Winds between 5-10 mph are expected to blow from the north starting Wednesday afternoon and could bring the wind chill to single digits in some parts of the region.

“Make sure to dress for winter weather by wearing a hat and gloves and if you’re feeling too cold, go inside,” said Meteorologist Jason Puma.

Meteorologists said a cold front is expected to drop wind chills to the single, and in some places negative, digits beginning Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022.

Puma said the temperature forecast is slightly below normal, but added Central Indiana typically sees the coldest temperatures of the year this week. In fact, on Jan. 19, 1994, Indianapolis recorded its coldest day on record, at minus 27 degrees.

“So when you remember that … then highs around the 20s don’t seem so bad,” Puma quipped.

Southern Indiana has a chance to see a small amount of rain and snowfall, but meteorologists said the precipitation won’t reach the Indianapolis area.

Puma said temperatures over the weekend should warm up slightly, reaching the 30s by Sunday.

Here are the predicted temperatures for the remainder of the week:

  • Thursday: Highs around 26 during the day. Temperatures will plunge to 16 at night.

  • Friday: Highs around 27 during the day. Temperatures will fall slightly, to the mid-20s, overnight.
