Cold-stunned turtles rescued and rehabilitated, on the way to freedom

This Monday, The Georgia Aquarium, The Georgia Sea Turtle Center will be releasing between 8-11 sea turtles (mix of loggerhead and kemp’s ridley sea turtles) that have been rehabilitated.

These turtles arrived at the Georgia Aquarium in November 2022 from Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts. These sea turtles were rescued off the coast of New England after they were found suffering from cold-stunning – a condition in which sea turtles become weak and inactive from exposure to extreme cold temperatures.

2-3 of the patients are undergoing further evaluation by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center veterinarian and may stay on Jekyll Island longer for further care and future release.

The release is happening at 10:00 a.m.
