Cold temps, deep freeze can wreak havoc on pipes; 3 tips to protect your home

Winter weather not only does a number on area roadways but also on your home.

A frozen pipe is not something a homeowner ever hopes to deal with. However, it is something that homeowners should take precautions to prevent with both metal and plastic pipes.

There are a number of ways to prevent this from happening to you or worse - a pipe busting. The American Red Cross suggests the following ways to prevent this from happening in your home:

  • If there are water supply lines in your garage, keep all doors closed as much as possible.

  • If pipes are enclosed in a kitchen or bathroom closet, open the doors so warm air can circulate the pipes.

  • Turn on all facets and allow water to slowly drip out

In extreme weather, cities can be faced with a larger pipe busting - a water main. News Center 7′s Nick Foley spoke with local officials on what you should do if you see a water main issue.

However, so far this winter the region hasn’t seen a consistent deep freeze that would cause these issue to happen.
