With weather forecasters predicting cold, wet weather in Redding later this week, the Good News Rescue Mission plans to open its doors all day as a warming center for anyone seeking shelter.

The mission's dining hall will be open all day starting Thursday and the men's and women's shelter will be open for people to stay the night, said mission spokesman Justin Wandro.

The mission opens as a warming shelter anytime the daytime temperature drops below 41 degrees or it rains or snows, he said.

“We don’t want anyone to be exposed to the cold and without resources this winter,” said Jonathan Anderson, the mission’s executive director. “That’s why we’re opening our Dining Hall as a place of refuge for anyone who needs help. It’s warm, dry, safe, and has access to restrooms and three meals a day. If you’re out on the street or just can’t afford heat, you’re welcome here at the Mission.”

The mission is at 3050 Veda St. in south Redding.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Wednesday afternoon, predicting rain in the valley and 10 inches to 30 inches of snow in the mountains of Shasta County. Forecasters predicted wind gusts from 45 mph to 65 mph. The advisory lasts through Saturday and tapering off Sunday.

Snow in the Sierra Nevada could reach 1 to 3 feet, the weather service said.
