Colder temps and light snow on the way for Somerset County

Old Man Winter is expected to make many appearances this weekend and into next week.

According to the National Weather Service, northern Pennsylvania will see additional snow from the Great Lakes on Saturday and Sunday, but that should turn into rain by the time it reaches Somerset County and the surrounding region by Sunday.

Winter storm warning

As Punxsutawney Phil makes his appearance late next week, much of the region will feel the cold chill of temperatures in the teens along with some varied snowfall.

According to AccuWeather meteorologists, the cold will stick around and bring waves of snow well into March this year.

"Even if Phil calls for an early spring, AccuWeather meteorologists say that millions of Americans may want to hold off on putting snow shovels and heavy coats back into storage," meteorologists said.

The NWS said snow showers are likely every day until February, but a wintry mix of rain and ice are likely to hit Somerset County on Wednesday.

The Weather Channel's extended forecast is calling for up to 3 inches of snow in early February followed by a warmup into the 40s before the middle of the month.

Almanac winter predictions

The Old Farmer's Almanac predicted that this winter would include bone-chilling cold and loads of snow.

The Farmer's Almanac predicted snow, slush and ice for Pennsylvania followed by mild conditions in February.

So far, it seems the Farmer's Almanac seems closer to the mark with the prediction of a milder winter for Somerset County. Aside from some brief snowstorms and a December cold snap, this winter has been on the mild side.
