Coldwater blanked by Lumen Christi on Purple Night

COLDWATER, MI. — The Coldwater Cardinals looked to celebrate their annual Purple Night with a possible conference victory over rival Jackson Lumen Christi on Friday, however it was not meant to be, as it was the Titans rolling past Coldwater, winning by the score of 41-0.Coldwater celebrated their annual Purple Game, just one moving part of a whole week of fundraising, enrichment and opportunity to help benefit the local cancer center. All proceeds raised by the event go directly towards the Branch County ProMedica Cancer Center. The difference for Coldwater this year is that a shipping problem kept the special purple jerseys from making their way to Coldwater, instead spending Friday night in a warehouse in Florida. To finish off purple week then the Cardinals will wear their purple jerseys next Friday during their Homecoming game with Pennfield.On to the action on the field Friday night, it was all Lumen Christi as a 28 point second quarter propelled the Titans into a lead they would never look back from, taking the 41-0 final.Lumen Christi out gained Coldwater 418-97 in total yards, including 361-87 on the ground and 57-10 through the air.The Titans opened up the scoring at the 5:14 mark of the first quarter as Derrick Walker scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. Andrew Salazar kicked the extra point, giving Lumen Christi the 7-0 lead after one quarter of play.Lumen Christi would then explode for 28 points throughout the second quarter, essentially putting the game out of reach.The Titans started their scoring with back-to-back scores from Joe Lathers, who scored on carries for 12 yards and 2 yards. Salazar kicked both extra points, pushing the lead to 21-0 with 8:14 left in the quarter.Lumen Christi added two more scores before the half as a 55-yard touchdown run from Kandale Williams, followed by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Lathers to Franklin, finding the halftime score of 35-0.Lumen Christi would put a cap on the win with a 21-yard touchdown run from Xavier Gallant with just :17 seconds left in the third quarter, finding what would be the final score of 41-0.Coldwater led on the day by Jayden Kegler who had 14 carries for 64 yards, an average of 4.6 yards per carry.Zach Coffing finished second on the team in rushing, carrying the ball six times for 20 yards while also adding a 4 for 11 effort passing for just 10 yards. Hauling in catches were Tyson Roby (1 for six yards) and Donte Work (1 for five yards).Leading the Lumen Christi attack was Derrick Walker who had 11 carries for 94 yards and a score, while Kandale Williams added two carries for 77 yards and a score.Leading Coldwater on the defensive side of the ball was Tyson Roby with nine tackles while Zach Coffing added eight tackles. Kevin Hall had four tackles, including one for a loss while Tre Miller added four tackles.Lumen Christi was led by Joe Lathers and Charlie Saunders with four tackles each.With the victory Lumen Christ improves to 2-3 on the season, riding a two game win streak after wins over Western and Coldwater. The Titans will next see action Friday when they host Northwest.Coldwater meanwhile falls to 0-5 on the season and will see action again next Friday when they host Pennfield for Homecoming.
