JACKSON, MI. — Jackson Lumen Christi High School played host to the whole of the Interstate 8 conference on Saturday for the end of season Interstate 8 Conference Wrestling Invite. When all was said and done it was the Hastings Saxons taking home the victory, besting the field with a score of 216 points. Northwest was not far behind in second place with a score of 208 points, followed by Western in third place with 157.5 points. Harper Creek finished in fourth place with 91 points, followed by Marshall in fifth place with 56 points, Coldwater in sixth place with 39 points, Lumen Christi in seventh place with 36 points, and Pennfield in eighth place with 9 points.

Coldwater came away with three medalists on the day, including one conference champion and two All I-8 honorees.

At 138 pounds it was Coldwater’s Tre’a Miller (34-9) besting the field to bring home the gold. Miller kicked off the day with a first round bye, followed by an intense back and forth battle with Josh Roe of Harper Creek in the semifinals. The two grapplers battled for three tough and high scoring periods, with Miller leading 7-1 after one period, only to see Roe close the score to 7-3 after two. The third quarter was fast and furious in terms of points, as an escape by Miller to start the period was followed by a Roe takedown and three point near fall, followed quickly by a reversal and a three point near fall for Miller as well, bringing the score to 13-7 with just under a minute left. Roe wasn’t done just yet, hitting a reversal with only :30 seconds left and moving in for a near fall, but only getting a two point near fall in the scramble as Miller hung on for the razor thin 13-12 win.

Miller took the momentum from his semifinal victory straight into the finals where he controlled Owen St. Andre of Parma Western, eventually taking the 9-5 decision victory and the Interstate 8 conference title.
