The Albion College baseball team got a little bit stronger early this spring after Coldwater’s Logan Farmer signed his letter of intent to play baseball as a Briton.

“I like that Albion College is close to home and that my parents and family could be there if I needed help,” said Farmer. “I also really like the coaching staff, they are really supportive and showed how much they really wanted me there, they showed a lot of interest. I looked at a couple of other schools, places like Hope College which I did like, but when I went to Albion they just sold me on their program and the coaches there, I just love what they are doing a lot.”

For Farmer playing at the next level has been a dream, however it wasn’t the only thing pushing him in his college choice.

“I always knew that I wanted to go into eduction, but I knew that I wanted to play baseball as well, so I narrowed down places where I could do both,” said Farmer. While baseball will be a big part of his time at Albion College, the other big part for Farmer will be his intent on majoring in Education with an emphasis on Secondary Education and History.

Albion College is getting in Farmer a talented and multi-dimensional ball player who has shown the ability to hit with average and with power in addition to his fielding prowess.

In this his senior season Farmer is batting a robust .314 on the year to go along with a .400 on base percentage, an OPS of .886 and a slugging percentage of .486. For the 2022 season Farmer has recorded 15 singles, four doubles, one triple and two home runs to go along with 13 Rbis, 13 runs scored and eight walks in contrast to only 14 strikeouts.

Farmer is just as capable, maybe more, on the defensive side of the ball where he holds down a number of spots for the Randy Spangler led Cardinals. Farmer has spent all of his time playing at the corners for Coldwater, either manning the hot corner at third base or playing first base. For the season Farmer has had 146 total chances on defense and has recorded 125 put outs and 17 assists with only four errors, for a tremendous fielding percentage of .973.

Not only is Farmer a talented player on the field, he is also a tremendous student off, having recently graduated from Coldwater High School Summa Cum Laude, meaning he graduated with the highest of honors with a grade point average of 3.7 or above. Farmer has earned numerous All Academic honors throughout his high school career including Interstate 8 Academic All Conference in football and baseball, including during the 2021 baseball season when Farmer eared Interstate 8 Academic All Conference and Academic All District as presented by the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association (MHSBCA).

Farmer’s career at Coldwater has been interesting for several reasons, most notably the pressure he has had to undergo with this father, Todd Farmer, serving as the CHS Athletic Director.

“There’s always a little bit of pressure with Dad being who he is,” said Farmer with a smile. “The expectations are there with people knowing who is he and them expecting me to do things a little better, it’s just something that has always been a driving force for me so it’s not that bad.”

Farmer has lived up to any and all expectations that may have been put on him, no matter the sport, having earned Interstate 8 All Conference honors in both baseball and football, including during the 2021 baseball season when he earned All Conference, All District and All Regional honors. Those honors are all a part of that drive that has long pushed Farmer to be the very best he can be.

“I enjoyed playing football, it was fun and something different but it has always been about baseball. Where I lived before moving here up in Muskegon I played on a few travel teams, then we moved here where I joined a different travel team before eventually trying out and making it with the Shamrock Travel Team organization out of Battle Creek. That’s where I have been since then, those coaches have been so supportive and are always there if you need help and they’ve helped me get to this point,” said Farmer.

At the collegiate level Farmer is looking to play at either corner position while letting his bat do most of the talking for Albion Baseball. “If you can hit, you can play wherever, but I prefer third base myself,” said Farmer.

“I talked with the Coach (Scott) Carden at Albion who is a really good friend and I think they are looking for Logan (Farmer) to be a corner guy,” said Coldwater head coach Randy Spangler. “For Logan what he has going for him is that even though he is a bigger and stronger kid he runs the bases really well so the speed is there, so he could even move to the outfield if need be. He has plenty of power at the plate so I think he can do big things. Like any athlete going to college it’s all a matter of keeping your focus and being able to juggle sports with academics all while being on your own at college. It’s a challenge for every kid but Logan is a hard worker, he’s a good kid and I think he’ll do big things at Albion.”

Looking back on the past four years at Coldwater High School Farmer reminisced about the many memories he has made, most notably his first career high school home run hit his freshman year at Lowe Field versus Lakewood High School. “Just hitting that home run and the way my teammates reacted was something i’ll never forget. I knew it was gone off the bat but you can’t act like that, you have to act like you’ve been there,” Farmer said with a smile.

Wherever Farmer plays, be it at either first base, third base or in the outfield, where ever he hits, be it a the top or bottom of the lineup, he will surely make a difference because of his drive, his determination and his work ethic. Congratulations to Coldwater’s Logan Farmer on signing his letter of intent to play baseball at Albion College.
