Coleman Hawkins defends technical foul call at Michigan State: “I didn’t say anything negative”

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WCIA) — Coleman Hawkins got a quick technical foul in the first half in an 88-80 loss at Michigan State on Saturday afternoon. The Illini senior was whistled just four minutes in after a made 3, after the game he wanted to make it clear, he didn’t feel like it should have been called.

“Before I went to shoot it, a guy said, ‘You suck’ sitting right there courtside and I turned around and said ‘Boom’ which is a saying that we say when we hit 3s,” Hawkins said. “I didn’t say anything negative, I didn’t say it to a player, so I don’t want people to think it was anything negative that I said. I’m not a negative person, I’m a positive person. People keep trying to say it’s a reputation thing, I’m not a bad kid so I hate seeing I’m getting a reputation thing, that’s not who I am.”

This was the second time Hawkins has been whistled for a technical foul this season following one at Ohio State last month at Ohio State. Hawkins and the Illini return to the court Tuesday night hosting Michigan for a 6 p.m. start at State Farm Center.
