Colin Firth is set to star in a new Sky drama series about the Lockerbie bombing.

The five-part show is set to tell the story of the 1988 disaster, in which a passenger jet exploded over the town of Lockerbie in Scotland.

All 259 on board were killed, as well as 11 residents in the town, with the five-part drama set to focus on Dr Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora was killed in the tragedy. Swire has since has worked alongside his wife Jane to get justice for the victims' families.

Firth will play the role of Swire, who "embarks on a relentless journey that not only jeopardizes his stability, family and life, but completely overturns his trust in the justice system".

"As the truth shifts under Jim’s feet, his view of the world is left forever sullied," the synopsis adds. "Exploring events from the disaster and its aftermath, Lockerbie provides an intimate account of a man, a husband, and a father who risks everything in memory of his daughter and the unflinching pursuit of truth and justice.”

The Sky series has been mainly written by Blackbird's David Harrower, alongside guest writer Maryam Hamidi (Vigil), and is based on Swire and Peter Biddulph’s book The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search for Justice.

Filming on the series is set to begin early this year.

Firth, who won a Best Actor Oscar in 2011 for The King's Speech, has recently starred in HBO series The Staircase, and made a cameo in last year's Rye Lane.

Reacting to the surprise appearance in the acclaimed romcom, star Vivian Oparah told Radio Times last year: "It was just insane.

"I was just like: 'Woah', but also I was like: 'Damn that was such an amazing baton pass – to have someone who's in the quintessential British rom-coms just being like, yeah, I want to support this movie, just for the sake of supporting it'."

Lockerbie will air on Sky and NOW in the UK, and Peacock in the US.
