Colin LoCascio RTW Spring 2021

To launch a novelty brand during quarantine may seem like a risky move, but not so for Colin LoCascio, whose playful hand teeters between whimsy and wearability. The designer, who also holds the role of design director of Kendall + Kylie, has gained momentum within the music video market and celebrity stylists, who have gravitated to this season’s fun bag of engineered prints on mesh tops, unexpectedly cool denim such as a sun-drenched lime bodysuit, and various crochet items with peeps of skin.

For his “Ones to Watch” profile, LoCascio teased the season’s getaway inspiration and how colors and textures were drawn from the ocean while the now-signature frog embellishments (tacked onto lacey knit items) were taken from nature walks. Along the brand’s unapologetic and optimistic blend were prints featuring citrus, clouds, abstracted watercolor florals and line drawings, though loud, also were made to easily complement tamer closet staples. Items he proposed as less trendy and able to live in a closet longer included printed silk georgette maxi dresses and “hook up” coordinating denim sets with circular cargo pockets.

“I think it’s the best job ever in that you can connect with people,” LoCascio said of designing now. “The intimacy of designing clothes that people wear on their body, which is in theory the most intimate you can be with someone, I think that’s a role I do really take seriously.”
