Oct. 10, 2019: Ancient Greek Sandals has teamed up with fellow Greek designer Mary Katrantzou. The collaboration was unveiled at the latter’s spring ’20 runway show. It took place last week south of Athens at Sounio in the marble remains of the 2,400-year-old Temple of Poseidon, built on a dramatic promontory overlooking the Aegean Sea. The label, handmade in Greece using centuries-old techniques, went all out for the show, creating 40 one-of-kind sandals, one to complement each look in Katrantzou’s collection. Classic gladiator styles, all of which were inspired by ancient Greek frescoes, sculptures and architecture, were selected from the AGS archives. Because color plays such a key role in the Katrantzou aesthetic, each style came in a different color of suede, nubuck, metallic leather or exotic skins, some embellished with glitter.

“I have always wanted to work with Mary, so when she approached us to design the sandals for her show, it was a dream come true. I loved the challenge of sourcing leathers to match her immense color palette. Hopefully [the ancient Greek god] Poseidon liked it, too,’’ enthused AGS co-founder and designer Christina Martini.

“I have admired Ancient Greek Sandals and the work of Christina Martini for many years, so when I started to plan this show at the Temple of Poseidon, they were my first choice for the footwear,” said Mary Katrantzou. Look also for a limited-edition capsule, inspired by Mary Katrantzou resort ’20 map prints, which will drop later this year.
