College baseball: Army schedule to include three-game trip to NCAA runner-up Vanderbilt

WEST POINT - A three-game set at NCAA runner-up Vanderbilt highlights a 51-game Army baseball slate for 2022. The Commodores won game one of the 2021 College World Series final but dropped the next two to champion Mississippi State.

The season gets underway on Feb. 18-20 in Charleston, South Carolina, as part of the Swig and Swing College Classic with Army facing Richmond, Air Force and Ball State. The three-game series with Vanderbilt will be Feb. 25-27.

A visit to Fayetteville, North Carolina, will feature games with Pittsburgh, NCAA participant Campbell and Ohio State from March 4-6. Army heads to the Lone Star State with two games at Texas Arlington (March 8-9) and three at NCAA tourney team Texas Christian (March 11-13). The end to 17-game road start comes March 18-20 with three games at Elon.

“We are really excited about the schedule we were able to put together for the 2022 season,’’ said Army head coach Jim Foster. “Our goal year in and year out is to compete against the best teams in the country and this season will be no different. We have put together a schedule that will challenge our program and prepare us for conference and postseason play.’’

The first of 18 home games at Doubleday Field will be March 23 against Siena. Hofstra (March 30), Fordham (April 19), Marist (April 26), Columbia (April 27), Long Island (May 3) and Manhattan (May 4) also visit West Point. Army was 12-8 at home in 2021.

Last season Army (28-25) captured the Patriot League’s North Division. The second-seeded Black Knights needed three semifinal games to dispatch No. 3 seed Lafayette and three finals games to knock off top-seed Lehigh. The Black Knights headed to the Lubbock Regional and, as the fourth seed, bowed to No. 1 Texas Tech, 6-3, and No. 2 UCLA, 13-6.

Army and Navy play two games in Annapolis, Maryland on March 27. A site has not been determined for doubleheaders set for April 23 and 24, which means there’s a good possibility there’s something in the works for playing at a neutral field, perhaps a Major League stadium like past games at Philadelphia, Boston and Baltimore. The Mets are on the road that weekend, leaving CitiField available. The Yankees are at home.
