College basketball: Pace women, Iona men, STAC honorees toasted at MBWA banquet

Two members of the Pace women's basketball team were among the players and coaches honored Monday by the Met Basketball Writers Association at the 89th MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown.

Pace's Lauren Schetter, a graduate student from Beacon, was chosen as the All-Met Division II women's basketball Player of the Year and her coach, Carrie Seymour, was named All-Met Coach of the Year.

Both Schetter and Seymour helped bring the Setters to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2001.

Schetter, a 5-foot-9 forward, averaged 19.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and a block per game while shooting 48.5% from the field. She was named an All-America honorable mention by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and the NCAA East Regional Most Outstanding Player.

Seymour's team finished 24-8, including three wins by six points or fewer in the NCAA Tournament after earning an at-large berth into the field. Seymour notched her 500th career victory on Jan. 22, then Pace went on to clinch the Northeast-10 regular-season title.

The Iona men's basketball team, which won the MAAC regular season title in its second season under Rick Pitino, landed two players on the All-Met teams. Graduate transfer Tyson Jolly, the MAAC Player of the Year, earned a first-team nod, while sophomore Nelly Junior Joseph was awarded second-team honors.

STAC contingent among honorees

Rutgers' Ron Harper Jr. won the prestigious Haggerty Award, which has been given to the region's Division I men's college Player of the Year since 1936. Shaheen Holloway was chosen as the Peter A. Carlesimo Coach of the Year after guiding Saint Peter's on its celebrated run to the Elite Elite.

Several other local standouts were among the players and coaches celebrated Monday. Seton Hall's Andra Espinoza-Hunter, an Ossining product, was named Division I second-team All-Met. Mercy College's Katie Wall — a 2,000-point scorer from Ketcham High School — was first-team All-Met in Division II. Sarah Ericson and Alex Huertas of St. Thomas Aquinas were named to the second team.

In the men's ranks, Demetre Roberts and Osbel Caraballo of St. Thomas Aquinas were first-team selections in the Division II and STAC coach Tobin Anderson was the Coach of the Year. Pace also had three honored: Brandon Jacobs and Bryan Powell were first team and Brandon Powell was second team.

Anderson's Coach of the Year nod was his fifth in nine seasons at STAC. The Spartans, who finished 28-5, won their sixth straight ECC tournament title and qualified for a seventh straight NCAA Tournament.

Roberts, a 5-foot-8 guard from Mount Vernon, was named All-Met for a fourth time. He has already announced his intention to return to STAC for a fifth season.
