College courses might be coming to Braintree High School. Here's how

BRAINTREE − Massasoit Community College is studying the possibility of holding classes at Braintree High School.

Massasoit would rent classrooms in the building for a satellite campus that would meet the needs of the college's students and faculty. The space is now occupied by early-childhood programs.

The classes would be available to Braintree High students and people from outside the school. The curriculum is expected to cover a wide range of topics for high school students interested in exploring new academic interests and careers. The courses would also help working adults advance or change their careers.

"This would enhance the community's and surrounding communities' access to higher education," said Braintree Mayor Charles Kokoros.

The proposed collaboration was announced in a joint statement by Kokoros and Massasoit President Ray DiPasquale.

The next phase of the study will determine the number of courses and educational opportunities that Massasoit Community College would provide at the high school.

"This creates a convenient and cost-effective option for those students looking to earn college credits during their time at (Braintree High School) and better prepare for long-term, future success," Kokoros said.

There's a demand for affordable education

DePasquale said Massasoit is always looking for new opportunities to increase access to affordable education. The school has campuses in Brockton, Canton and Middleboro as well as an online program.

"A college education is a vital resource for young people looking to start careers and enter the workforce," DePasquale said.

More than 8,000 students enroll for credit classes at Massasoit each year, and 1,500 enroll in noncredit community education or workforce development programs.

Kokoros said an advantage of community college classes is that the credits are transferable to state universities.

The planned move of the Braintree school system's kindergarten and early-childhood programs into the former South Middle School building next fall will free up classroom space at the high school. The move will also open the Monatiquot Early Childhood Center and the Colbert School Administration buildings to new uses.
