College of the Desert to give fully-vaccinated students $100 Amazon gift cards

College of the Desert students will receive $100 Amazon gift cards if they provide certification of COVID-19 vaccination.

All employees, students and college volunteers are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the college on or before Jan. 31, or claim an exemption to the college's vaccine requirement by that date.

However, the $100 incentive only applies to fully-vaccinated students.

To receive a gift card, students must certify they have received two shots of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

"Boosters are not considered as part of the vaccine (requirement), although we do encourage it," said Jessica Enders, the college's interim executive director of institutional advancement.

Employees, students and volunteers who do not provide certification of vaccination, obtain an authorized exemption or undergo weekly COVID-19 testing and provide proof of negative test results will be denied access to on-site campus programs after Jan. 31, according to the college's vaccine affidavit.

The college said more information about the funding source of the gift cards and the number of gift cards expected to be distributed will be available soon.
