New College displays arrogance in response to dean's tasteless comedy act

Over 300 people packed the center of the New College campus Feb. 23, 2023, to express their support for educational freedom, which has been threatened since Gov. Ron DeSantis took over the school, appointing new leaders to the board of trustees.

College supports dean’s off-color comedy

New College of Florida Dean David Rancourt’s choice of comedy material, followed by the college president’s supportive comments and statement that his own job doesn’t pay well (that should have gotten a big laugh), should be sent to every high school counselor and Christian school in the country.

They have a right to know that these “anti-woke” college leaders think little boys should be encouraged to expose themselves to little girls and that violent anal rape by men is funny. The president, Richard Corcoran, is a close ally of Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Singer not qualified to endorse anyone

According to an article in The Washington Post on Jan. 31, popular singer Taylor Swift has “endorsed Democrats nationwide since 2018.”

Until the star passes a single course in macroeconomics, I don’t care what her political opinions are and neither should anyone else.

Politics controls the economy so it’s good to know how the engine works before you endorse someone who claims to know how to fix it.

Part one of my macroeconomics textbook is about the failure of socialism. The Democratic Party is all about socialism and has been since the 1970s.  Swift’s prior endorsements appear to have been based on social rather than fiscal issues. Unfortunately, if the country goes broke from overspending, the social issues won’t matter - just ask the Venezuelans.

For someone as highly competitive as she is, she should choose the party that celebrates achievement, not the one that embraces “tax-the-rich” class warfare that divides us.

I’d like to see her hold concerts in socialist and communist countries and ask her fans there how they like it.  As Milton Friedman, Republican and Nobel Prize Winner in Economics once said, “One of the great mistakes is to judge policies and programs by their intentions rather than their results.”

Numbers don’t lie: Trump was failure

In the Herald-Tribune of Jan. 31, a letter writer pleaded with Democrats to “Take off your blinders,” urging us (I’m a registered Democrat) to rid ourselves of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

I examined former President Donald Trump's track record carefully. I suggest the writer do the same, as he seemingly sidestepped the glaring failures of Trump’s presidency.

For those contemplating replacing Biden with Trump, let’s revisit Trump’s so-called accomplishments during his four years in office (from FactCheck.org):

  • 2.9 million jobs lost.

  • Unemployment up by 1.6 percentage points, hitting 6.3%.

  • International trade deficit expanded despite Trump’s promise to reduce the deficit.

  • 2020 U.S. trade deficit, the highest since 2008, surged by 40.5% since 2016.

  • Three million more Americans lacked health insurance.

  • Federal debt skyrocketed from $14.4 trillion to $21.6 trillion, averaging over a trillion dollars annually. The nation cannot afford a return to the disastrous policies of the past administration.  My suggestion, for the sake of the future of the country, is to reelect Biden and Harris.

GOP wasting time pursuing Hunter Biden

Recent efforts to attack President Joe Biden have fallen further into disrepute.

A business partner of Hunter Biden’s, John Robinson Walker, said in sworn testimony that President Biden “was never involved” in any of the business dealings between him and Hunter Biden.

“To be clear,” Walker said, “President Biden − while in office or as a private citizen − was never involved in any of the business activities we pursued. … Any statement to the contrary is simply false.”

He went on to add, “Hunter made sure there was always a clear boundary between any business and his father. Always. And as his partner, I always understood and respected that boundary.”

House Republicans would better serve the American people if they pursued aims such as border security and support for U.S. allies rather than wasteful performances, paid for with our taxes, intended to embarrass the president.

Can't trust anyone charged with 91 felonies

In response to Steve Cortes’ column Jan. 21, “Only Trump can put America on the right path”:

All I have to say is that I wouldn’t trust a banker, doctor, teacher, clergy or even my next-door neighbor with 91 felony charges, let alone trust that person to get within spitting distance of the White House.
