College football: Army trio up for national awards

Three Army football players have been tabbed for prominent awards watch lists for 2022.

All-American linebacker Andre Carter II has been named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list for the top defensive player in college football. Carter is one of 85 athletes from 61 different schools named to the list. The award is voted on by members of the Football Writers Association of America.

Carter established himself during a breakout 2021 season when he set the Army single-season sack record with 15.5, ranking No. 2 in the nation in the category. He also had 44 total tackles, with 18.5 going for lost yardage, and forced four fumbles, blocked one kick and had one interception.

Center Connor Bishop was named to the Outland Trophy watch list for the nation’s best interior lineman. Bishop is one of 89 players nominated. Last season, he centered a line that helped Army rank No. 2 in the nation in rushing yards per game (286) and first in total rushing touchdowns (46).

Safety Marquel Broughton is one of 114 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, an award that celebrates academic dedication, exemplary community service and impact on the field. A total of 23 award recipients will come from all divisions of college football, with one team captain voted upon through ESPN.com.

Broughton has been named captain for a second time. He posted a career-best 80 tackles last season and has 156 career stops.

Broughton has led community service projects at Groceries on Us at Dream Center Church in 2020; read to Highland Falls Middle School students; volunteered at Special Olympics events; and, met with Army veterans at the Sunrise Senior Living Center on Long Island. At West Point, Broughton is the Regimental Commander for the entire Garrison, and in the spring he was a Platoon Sergeant who handled accountability, standards and the well-being of 28 cadets.

All three Army players were named to the Phil Steele Magazine preseason all-independent team.

Army opens the season on Sept. 3 at Coastal Carolina.
