The college football coaching carousel begins earlier and earlier each year.

In 2022, it started after Week 2, when Nebraska dismissed Scott Frost after a 1-2 start that included a loss to Georgia Southern.

By Oct. 31, six Power 5 jobs and an additional FBS job has opened up in-season. Some schools, like Wisconsin, have an interim coach that could reasonably draw consideration. Others are biding time ahead of the end of the season.

Auburn football's firing of Bryan Harsin on Monday was the latest in-season coaching change.

College football coaching carousel 2022: Who has been fired, hired?

Nebraska

When was Scott Frost fired? Sept. 11, one day after a home loss to Georgia Southern.

2022 record at the time of Frost's departure: 1-2

Coach's record at the school: 16-31 in five seasons, and no bowl appearances

Interim coach: Mickey Joseph, the team's passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. Joseph is known as one of the country's best recruiters. The Cornhuskers are 2-3 under Joseph.

Have they hired a permanent coach? No.

Was the change a surprise? Absolutely not. Frost went 16-31 at Nebraska. That can't be.

--------------

Arizona State

When was Herm Edwards fired? Sept. 18, after a home loss to Eastern Michigan

2022 record at the time of Edwards' departure: 1-2

Coach's record at the school: 26-20 over five seasons

Interim coach: Shaun Aguano, the team's running backs coach. Arizona State is 2-3 under Aguano.

Have they hired a permanent coach? No.

Was the change a surprise? Not really. Edwards' teams made bowl games in the three full, non-COVID impacted seasons he coached. The combination of NCAA investigations into possible COVID-dead period recruiting violations and the 1-2 start to 2022 that included a loss to Eastern Michigan produced the decision to dismiss Edwards.

--------------

Georgia Tech

When was Geoff Collins fired? Sept. 26, two days after a loss to UCF

2022 record at the time of Collins' departure: 1-3

Coach's record at the school: 10-28 in four seasons

Interim coach: Brent Key, the team's assistant head coach, run game coordinator and offensive line coach. The Yellow Jackets are 2-2 under Key.

Have they hired a permanent coach? No.

Was the change a surprise? No. Collins had a tall task changing over a roster that had spent years running the triple-option offense. But GT's defense struggled right along with the offense. The talent levels just weren't good enough to compete in the ACC like Georgia Tech wants to in 2022.

--------------

Colorado

When was Karl Dorrell fired? Oct. 2, one day after a loss to Arizona

2022 record at the time of Dorrell's departure: 0-5

Coach's record at the school: 8-15

Interim coach: Mike Sanford, the team's offensive coordinator and QB coach. Sanford was the head coach at Western Kentucky for two seasons. Colorado is 1-2 with Sanford as the interim coach.

Have they hired a permanent coach? No.

Was the change a surprise? No, and it was a curious fit from the start of Dorrell's tenure. Dorrell was UCLA's coach from 2003-07 and was 35-27 before leaving and spending most of the next 12 years in the NFL. He was the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 2020 (with a 4-2 record in the truncated COVID-impacted year), and was 4-13 since. The Buffaloes were the worst Power 5 team in the country at the time of Dorrell's departure.

--------------

Wisconsin

When was Paul Chryst fired? Oct. 2, one day after a loss to Illinois

2022 record at the time of Chryst's departure: 2-3

Coach's record at the school: 67-26 in eight seasons

Interim coach: Jim Leonhard, the team's defensive coordinator and a young, rising coach in the sport. The Badgers are 2-1 under Leonhard.

Have they hired a permanent coach? Not yet.

Was the change a surprise? Yes and no. While Chryst had been competitive inside the Big Ten West division, he had not approached the 13-1 record in 2017. Wisconsin finished unranked in the AP poll in four of the last five seasons.

--------------

Charlotte

When was Will Healy fired? Oct. 23, one day after a loss to FIU

2022 record at the time of Healy's departure: 1-7

Coach's record at the school: 15-24 in four seasons

Interim coach: Peter Rossomando, the team's offensive line coach and a former head coach in the FCS and Division II ranks. The 49ers are 1-0 under Rossomando.

Have they hired a permanent coach? No.

Was the change a surprise? Yes and no. Healy was considered a rising star when Charlotte hired him four seasons ago, but he also went 8-18 in the last three years, Few coaches can survive that, and the 49ers allowed the most points per game in the nation this season.

--------------

Auburn

When was Bryan Harsin fired? Oct. 31, two days after a loss to Arkansas

2022 record at the time of Harsin's departure: 3-5

Coach's record at the school: 9-12 in two seasons

Interim coach: TBD.

Have they hired a permanent coach? No. The impending hire of AD John Cohen will surely set the ball in motion.

Was the change a surprise? No. Auburn's winter internal investigation of Harsin and his program ended up being a signal of what was to come. The Tigers needed to be really, really good on the field to turn the narrative around on Harsin, and they weren't close to decent.
