College Football: Siena Heights gets big homecoming victory

ADRIAN — After back-to-back losses by a combined eight points, the Siena Heights football team took on No. 22 St. Francis (Ind.) for homecoming Saturday to open Mid-States Football Association Mideast play.

The Saints needed a win and got it, 13-10, to improve to 2-2 on the season and open their tough league schedule with a victory.

The SHU offense has faced struggles in the first three games, averaging 229 yards per game going into Saturday. The Saints gave redshirt freshman quarterback Hayden Lehman his first action of the season and he led SHU to 376 yards of offense, which was enough to hold off the Cougars (2-2, 0-1 MSFA Mideast).

While the defense showed signs of improvement, the defense maintained its stout season, holding SFU 206 yards of offense, only six yards on the ground. The defense came up with five sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception and 10 pass breakups, including five from Armand Childs.

The Cougars had a chance to tie the game late, facing a fourth-and-10 from the SHU 41-yard line and 15 seconds on the clock. SFU opted for a 58 yard field goal attempt, which fell well short.

Coach Thoughts

Matt Kohn, SHU: Any win is a good win in our league. It's huge, I couldn't be more proud of our players and the way they responded. We've seen some tough times in our losses and it was very evident to us that we weren't playing to our potential. Being able to stick to our gameplan and stick to what we do, it was nice to come out with a win.
