College notes

Oct. 18—Around the region

— Freshman Hannah Daniewicz (Norwich Free Academy) is enjoying a productive season playing for the Salve Regina women's soccer team. She scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Endicott on Oct. 8 and had an assist on her team's only goal in a 2-1 loss at Nichols College on Saturday. She leads Salve in goals (five), assists (three) and points (13) through 15 games.

— Jordan Malloy (Bacon Academy) continues to have a terrific freshman season as a member of the Stonehill College women's cross country team. She recently earned a Northeast Conference record fifth rookie of the week award. On Oct. 8 at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Dorchester, Mass., Malloy finished 21st out of 122 runners, posting a time of 18 minutes, 54 seconds and helping Stonehill take fourth overall.

— Springfield College freshman Meredith Healy (East Lyme), The Day's All-Area Girls' Soccer Player of the Year last fall, scored her second goal of the season in a 2-1 loss to WPI on Saturday.

— Also at Springfield, junior Blane Hart (East Lyme) rushed for 47 yards on five carries and caught one pass for 39 yards in Saturday's 69-20 win over Norwich. His brother Cam, a linebacker, made two tackles.

— Bucknell University senior Sam Whittaker (East Lyme) led his team with an 18th place finish on Friday at the Penn State National Open cross country meet that featured 14 teams and 162 runners. He finished 77th last year at the same race.

— Wesleyan senior defensive tackle Nick Helbig (Fitch) ranks first on the team in sacks and forced fumbles with five and four, respectively, in five games.

— Sophomore Delaney Farinha (NFA) scored her third goal of the season for the Franklin Pierce women's soccer team in a 3-1 loss to Le Moyne College on Sept. 27 and had an assist in a 5-0 win over American International on Oct. 5.

— Simmons College senior outside hitter Sydney Iannantuono (East Lyme) had 17 kills and 22 digs in wins over Johnson & Wales and Elms College on Oct. 8.

— Senior midfielder Caroline Wallace (Old Lyme) has appeared in all 16 games for the Johnson & Wales women's soccer team. She has three goals and two assists.

— Wentworth junior Caleb Robbins (Fitch) had his first point of the season — an assist — in a 4-1 win over UMass Boston in men's soccer action on Oct 4.

— Emmanuel College freshman Liam Cook (Montville) scored his second goal of the season in a 4-0 shutout of Lasell University on Oct. 1.

— Junior Nora Ryan (Fitch) contributed 10 kills, four aces and two blocks in the Plymouth State University's sweep of Castleton University and Fisher College on Saturday. Ryan is first on the team in blocks (54), second on the team in kills (153) and service aces (29) in 20 matches.

— Endicott College freshman midfielder Tim Lynch (Fitch), a regular in the starting lineup, notched his first career assist in a 4-1 win over Keene State in men's soccer action last month.

— Sophomore Alex Ard (Waterford) has started all 11 games for the Bryant University men's soccer team.

— Graduate student Nick Benjamin (Stonington) has appeared in nine games, starting six, for the Providence College men's soccer team. He has one goal and two assists.

— Eastern Connecticut State University senior setter Meg Verizzi (Lyman Memorial) chipped in 54 assists and 16 digs on Saturday in matches against Western New England University, and Wheaton.

— Junior defensive back Logan Chappell (Griswold) had four tackles for the UMass Dartmouth football team in a 34-7 win over Westfield State on Saturday to improve to 6-1 overall. Chappell has 24 tackles and a sack in seven games. Sophomore wide receiver Antonio Brown (Montville) has six receptions for 50 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Tracking the Bears

— The Coast Guard Academy men's soccer team resides in fourth place in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference standings heading into this week's action. The top five teams qualify for the conference tournament.

A sturdy defense has helped the Bears go 2-2-1 in league play, 8-2-3 overall. They posted their ninth shutout of the season on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Springfield. Goalie John Vaaler has a team-high four shutouts.

— The women's volleyball team carries a four-match winning streak into Tuesday's action against Springfield. Sophomore Shannon Shaw has a team-high 209 kills for the Bears, who are 16-5 overall, 4-3 in conference play.

Camel highlights

— The Connecticut College field hockey team topped last season's overall win total by beating Colby 4-1 Saturday, raising the team record to 3-9. It was also the Camel's first New England Small College Athletic Conference victory since 2019.

With one win in the last three games, the Camels can tie their most overall wins since 2018. Bridget McGann, a freshman from West Hartford, leads the team with seven goals and three assists.

— Conn College senior Mya Johnson (Old Lyme) ranks first on the women's soccer team in goals (four), assists (four) and points (12). With three regular season games to go, the Camels (7-4-1, 3-3-1) are battling for a spot in the conference tournament field.

Mariners riding a wave

— Mitchell College's Julia Lent earned New England Collegiate Conference rookie of the week honors for women's volleyball after averaging 4.88 digs per set in two matches. She also had 27 digs in a five-set loss to New England College.
