College notes: Licking County grads anchoring Division I lines

Jarrod Hufford, Reid Holskey and Nate Williams all are again starting on offensive lines at the NCAA Division I level.

Hufford, a Licking Valley graduate, helped Iowa State rack up 463 total yards in the Cyclones' 43-10 victory against Ohio. The 3-0 Cyclones host Baylor at noon Saturday in a game to be broadcast on ESPN2.

Holskey, a Licking Heights graduate, helped Miami total 408 yards in the RedHawks' 31-14 victory against Robert Morris. The RedHawks visit Northwestern at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in a game to be broadcast on Big Ten Network.

Williams, a Newark Catholic graduate, helped Akron record 386 yards in a 30-23 overtime victory against St. Francis (Pennsylvania). The Zips visit Liberty at 6 p.m. Saturday in game that can be streamed on ESPN+.

Windholtz sets mark

Patricia Windholtz continues to make her mark for the Mount St. Joseph women's golf team.

The Newark Catholic graduate shot a program-record 146 over the 36-hole Manchester Invitational. Windholtz shot rounds of 75 and 71 to take medalist honors and lead the Lions to the team championship.

Windholtz, a senior, was an All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honoree last season.

Auer still flawless

Ryan Auer has been perfect during the first month of the college football season.

Auer, a Newark Catholic graduate, recently made a 45-yard field goal and was 6-for-6 on extra points for Concordia during a 45-7 victory against Finlandia. The performance earned Auer Special Teams Player of the Week honors from both the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and D3Football.com.

Auer, a sophomore, now is 9-for-9.

Van Horn finds the net

Karah Van Horn scored both goals for the Mercyhurst women's soccer team in a 2-0 victory against California University of Pennsylvania.

Van Horn, a Granville, graduate previously scored in a 3-2 victory against Seton Hill. The two performances earned her Player of the Week honors from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division.

Van Horn, a sophomore, has scored a team-best five goals for the Lakers, who entered the week at 5-1-1.

Shomaker swinging big

Erin Shomaker has lifted the Florida Gulf Coast volleyball team to an impressive start to the season.

Shomaker, a Granville graduate, piled up 27 kills in a 3-1 victory against host Maryland to give the Eagles the championship in the Maryland Invitational earlier this month. The 3-0 weekend highlighted the Eagles' current 10-3 run.

Shomaker, a senior, has totaled a team-best 169 kills. She is the two-time Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and led the Eagles to their second NCAA tournament victory in program history last season.
