ACM students use scholarship to advance academic journeys

The Allegany College of Maryland Foundation, which helps students achieve their educational goals by offering more than 2,500 scholarships annually, announced that the following student from Somerset County was awarded scholarship to attend Allegany College of Maryland:

  • Michelle Bonadio, Fairhope, Jean B. Burke Memorial Scholarship.

Troll graduates from Pitt-Bradford

Christopher Adam Troll of Somerset, graduated May 1 from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford with a degree in exercise science.

UECU announces 2022 student scholarship for Pennsylvania students

For the 2022 scholarship contest, UECU is offering a $3,000 scholarship to students in Pennsylvania. Through a partnership with the Pennsylvania American Consumer Council (PACC), students who live or attend school in Pennsylvania can join the credit union and apply for the scholarship.

Students who will be attending college or a technical/trade school in the fall of 2022 can join the credit union online at uecu.org/join and submit a scholarship application at uecu.org/scholarship. Scholarship applicants have an opportunity to grow their money skills with UECU’s virtual-based financial wellness program, CueItUp.

Applicants can choose from an array of financial topics, including Building Healthy Financial Habits, How to Use a Checking Account, How to Use Credit Cards Responsibly, Buying a Car, and many more.

To help parents and students navigate through the financial aid and student loan financing process, the Credit Union is also offering a free webinar, Student Loans: Connecting the Pieces. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about the financial aid process, federal and private student loans, smart borrowing tips, and the timeline from application through student loan disbursement and servicing.

Fritz honored

Alivia Fritz of Somerset, was recognized for academic achievement at Lebanon Valley College's Spring Awards and Recognition Ceremony. Fritz, a graduate of Somerset Area Senior High School, is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience and psychology at The Valley and won the following award: Alumni Scholarship.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi inducts new members

The following people from Somerset County were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

  • Katherine Kinsinger of Somerset at Frostburg State University

  • Shana Thomas of Meyersdale at Frostburg State University

They are among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5% of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10% of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
