College notes: MCCC adds 18 to Phi Theta Kappa

Monroe County Community College recently held an initiation ceremony for 18 students who were accepted into the college's chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for community colleges.

New inductees are: Emily Klyder, Ariana Burkey, Mya Snow, Morgan Kay, Jewell Mason, Kyle Sutherland, Lyndsey Golen, Paige Smith, Ella Foshag, Madison DuVall and Lillian Runyan of Monroe; Leslie Keaton of East Pointe; Alexa McMullin of LaSalle, Rachael Miska of Newport, Riley McDaniel and Lisa Berry of Temperance, Samantha Francis and Justin Schley of Newport and Marie Underwood of Dundee.

MCCC's PTK chapter was chartered on January 14, 1969, with four members. Since that time, over 2,000 MCCC students have become members of PTK. Students must have completed at least 12 hours of coursework toward an associate or bachelor’s degree or at least six hours of coursework toward a certificate credential, and have a cumulative 3.5 grade point average or higher.

Monroe County Community College

The Foundation at Monroe County Community College awarded the Monroe County Exchange Club Scholarship ($1,250) to Ty Grube of Newport.

A 2022 graduate of Jefferson High School, he will study nursing. While attending JHS, Grube was named co-vice president of Student Council, secretary of National Honor Society, head of public relations for the Student Prevention Leadership Team and was the Jefferson Bear school mascot. He was an assistant coach for the Frenchtown Youth Softball League and volunteers at Red Cross blood drives, St. Anne’s Food Closet, Monroe County Special Olympics, Empty Bowls and at cross-country and track meets. He has helped clean up at the St. Charles Catholic Church Cemetery and at the parish’s annual festival. He is the son of Michael and Carrie Grube.

Concordia University

SEWARD, Neb. -- T'leah Williams of Monroe received a master’s degree in education May 7 from Concordia University in Nebraska.

University of the Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- Two area students graduated recently from the University of the Cumberlands.

Ahalya Reddy Vemireddy of Temperance received a master of science degree in information technology.

Jacob Calhoun of Lambertville receieved a bachelor of science degree in business administration

Columbia College

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Jessica Hadley of Dundee is on the dean’s list for the spring semester at Columbia College.

Manchester University

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – Justin Major of Monroe won 10th place in the “Elevate the Pitch” national sales competition sponsored by the Florida Press Association.

Major is majoring in accounting at Manchester University. Six Manchester students placed in the top 10.

Bob Jones University

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Two area students are on the dean's list for the spring semester at Bob Jones University.

Jared Banks of Woodhaven is a senior majoring in business administration. Susannah Castle of Brownstown Township is a senior majoring in graphic design.
