College Notes: Upper Arlington grad Dane Goodwin a bright spot for Notre Dame basketball

Notre Dame basketball is off to an inauspicious 3-4 start, but former Upper Arlington standout Dane Goodwin and his numbers suggest the Irish have an opportunity to wade through the early-season fog.

Goodwin is averaging 14.3 points per game while shooting 46.1% from the field and 41.7% on 3-pointers. He ranks 16th in the ACC in scoring average, 15th on 3-pointers and third from the line (93.8%).

Goodwin, who earned the team’s most-improved honors in 2020 while averaging 11.8 points and 5.15 rebounds, has at least 10 points in every game this season.

At UA, Goodwin set school records for points (1,951) and rebounds (817). In 2018 he was named Ohio Mr. Basketball, Gatorade Player of the Year, USA Today POY and USA Today All-American third team. He was also twice named to the All-Ohio first team.

Adams flourishing at Hocking College

Freshman guard Trevell Adams (South) averaged 29 points over three games last week for Hocking College and the Hawks are 10-0. Adams, who leads the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference with 26.8 points per game, made 33 of 63 shots and 18 of 22 free throws while adding 11 rebounds, seven steals and seven assists in wins over Ohio Christian JV, Edison State CC and Wayne County CC.

Adams, who helped lead the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish in the 2019 Division II state championship game, redshirted a year at Ohio Dominican before transferring to Hocking.

OSU wrestling places second in Vegas

Kaleb Romero went 4-0 to win the 184-pound weight division at the Cliff Keen Wrestling Invitational at Las Vegas. The Buckeyes placed second with 104 points, 21 points behind event winner Nebraska. Sammy Sasso took second in the 149 division after a 6-2 defeat to top-ranked Yianni Diamkomihalis and Ethan Smith (174) lost a 7-5 sudden-victory in the final to Mikey Labriola of Nebraska. Carson Kharchla (165) and Tate Orndorff (285) made it to the semifinals.

Top performers

Otterbein’s Bryn Mangold scored 5 points in the final 45 seconds of regulation, then 6 of the team’s 11 overtime points in a 65-63 victory over Capital. She finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

Senior linebacker Nate Robinson (Dublin Coffman) of Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, earned All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division first-team honors. Robinson, who transferred from Miami of Ohio, finished with 71 tackles (35 solo), including 16 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks and four passes defended.

Ohio Wesleyan senior Hector Gomez (DeSales) was named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III All-America first team. Gomez shared the North Coast Athletic Conference lead in goals (12), tied for second in assists (7), led the league in points (31) and was named NCAC Midfielder of the Year. Sophomore teammate Jaggar Brooker (Olentangy Liberty) was named to the DIII All-America third team.

Peyton Howell of Ohio Wesleyan won the high jump at the Wittenberg Tiger Opener Indoor Track meet with a leap of 1.71 meters, which is the best jump in Division III meets this season.

Denison’s Chris Slater’s weight throw of 13.27 meters was good for second place at the Tiger Opener. It set an NCAC record for the season and is the 11th best in DIII.

Also from the Tiger Opener, Wittenberg's Zeke Bennett (Hilliard Bradley) recorded two top-10 times in Division III by winning the 400-meter dash (49.26) and helping the Tigers take first in the 1600-meter relay (3:24.68).

Ohio State's Charlie Clark broke a school record in the 800 freestyle event at the U.S. Open swimming championships at Greensboro, North Carolina. Clark finished second with a time of 7:54.40, trailing 2020 Olympic champion Bobby Fink by 0.33 seconds. Clark's time beat his own previous school record byfour seconds. Also, Hannah Bach earned the first national win of her career in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.01.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association named Ohio State's Emily Londot, Mac Podraza and Rylee Rader first-team members of the All-Region team (Northeast). Additionally, Arica Davis was named AVCA Northeast Freshman of the Year and Kylie Murr was an honorable mention nominee.
