New College to offer free session of Classical Learning Test, alternative to SAT and ACT

New College of Florida will host a free session of the Classical Learning Test, a "classical and Christian" alternative to the SAT and ACT standardized tests for college admission on Nov. 2, the college announced Thursday.

The exam, offered by New College for free in partnership with the Classical Learning Test company, will be remotely proctored, according to the release. Those interested in registering for the CLT at New College can do so at apply.ncf.edu/portal/clt-reg to receive a code to waive the $59 test fee.

On Sept. 8, Florida's Board of Governors approved the Classical Learning Test, or CLT, for use in college admissions at Florida public universities. Before the board approved the alternative test, New College had announced on May 9 that it would accept the CLT for entrance to the school.

In May, Interim New College President Richard Corcoran said the school's acceptance of the CLT would help extend New College admissions to more homeschooled and "classically educated students"

“New College has a history of educating highly motivated students from all backgrounds, including homeschooled students and classically educated students who find a range of tests useful for their unique methods and values,” Corcoran said. “Adding the CLT to our accepted entrance examinations creates more educational choice and freedom in the undergraduate admissions process and we look forward to meeting more families and students as we expand and grow."

Jeremy Tate, the founder and CEO of the test, said in an interview with the Tampa Bay Times that it offers an alternative to an "increasingly ideological" SAT exam administered by College Board. The test has been described as "classical and Christian" by Chad Pecknold, one of the CLT's board members.
