College receives grant to expand prior learning credentialing

Sep. 26—Clatsop Community College has received a $50,000 grant which will help students turn prior work and experience into academic credit.

Students with previous work experience, military training, internships, volunteering and self-study may be awarded academic credit if their knowledge is comparable to college-level learning, the college said in a statement.

The college already offers some prior learning credentialing, but the funds will go toward hiring part-time staff to evaluate programs, expand offerings and streamline the process.

The grant opportunity came from state legislation approved earlier this year.

Students and others interested in having their prior work evaluated is encouraged to reach out to the registrar's office.
