College roundup: Bates football finishes season with win over Hamilton

Nov. 13—CLINTON, N.Y. — The Bates College football team wrapped up its season with a victory over Hamilton, winning Saturday's finale 19-14.

As in the Bobcats' 2019 and 2021 wins over Hamilton, late-game heroics were needed to secure victory — this time, it was an interception by Thomas Formus with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Quarterback Colton Bosselait passed for 260 yards and three touchdowns for the Bobcats (3-6). Bates grabbed the lead midway through the third quarter on Mohamed Diawara's 15-yard TD catch — his second of the game.

The Bobcats trailed 14-12 at halftime. Bosselait connected with Jackson Hayes for a 33-yard scoring play early in the second quarter, then threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Diawara late in the first half.

Diawara (83 yards receiving) and Hayes (64 yards) each caught a team-high six passes. Reza Badiee led the Bobcats' rushing attack with 65 yards on 18 carries.

Matt Banbury racked up 125 yards on 16 carries for the Continentals (2-7).

Reese Poffenbarger threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Julian Hicks with no time on the clock after back-to-back penalty by the University of Maine to lift Amherst to a 23-21 win in a Colonial Athletic Association football game on Saturday in Albany, New York.

Maine (2-8, 2-5 CAA) took a 21-17 lead when quarterback Joe Fagnano scored on a 5-yard touchdown run and Cole Baker kicked the extra point with 1:50 left.

Albany (3-7, 2-5) then faced 4th-and-20 from the Maine 27 when Poffenbarger extended the drive with a 21-yard pass to Thomas Greaney. After spiking the ball to kill the clock, Poffenbarger threw two incomplete passes, but the Black Bears were called for a personal foul on the third-down play giving Albany first down from the 3-yard line. After another incomplete pass, the Black Bears were called for holding and pass interference on the next two plays, giving the Great Danes another shot with no time on the clock.

Fagnano completed 15 of 25 passes for 164 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed 10 times for 56 yards.

Poffenbarger completed 19 of 37 passes for 274 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Todd Sibley rushed 19 times for 165 yards.

The Mustangs improved to 6-0 with a dominating victory at the Yankee Small School Conference/Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge in Pottersville, New York.

Central Maine Community College seized control early, jumping out to a 25-3 lead over the Knights (0-4) after one period, and leading 40-7 at halftime.

Destiny Mora Lopez led the Mustangs with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Luna Love contributed 11 points and Lewiston graduate Emily Strachan scored 10.

Luisa Welcke scored twice as the Black Bears (8-7, 6-4 Hockey East) beat the Crusaders (2-11-1, 1-9) in Orono.

Elise Morphy and Mira Seregely also scored for Maine.
