College roundup: Bates settles for split with Hamilton in NESCAC softball action
Apr. 15—CLINTON, N.Y. — Madison Hollis was 2 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored as Bates College (11-10, 5-6 NESCAC) beat Hamilton 8-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
Hollis also pitched a complete in the circle, scattering 10 hits while striking out three and walking one.
Kennedy Jones added three hits and two RBI.
Hamilton (16-13, 6-7) won the second game 3-2. Cassidy Musco led Bates with two hits out of the leadoff spot and scored one of the Bobcats' runs. Delaney Rankin took the loss, giving up six hits and one walk while striking out one batter.
Olivia Scott went the distance on the mound, striking out 10 batters and giving up three hits in the Mustangs' 4-1 victory over the Owls (9-12) in the first game of a softball doubleheader in Auburn.
Riley McNamara, Emily Wormwood, Olivia Scott and Sarah Poli each drove in a run for CMCC (19-6) in the first game.
The Owls struck back in Game 2 with a 3-1 victory. Dalaney Anfinson drove in two runs and Gracelyn Walsh and Olivia Gray e each doubled for the Owls.
McNamara and Poli had the hits for the Mustangs in the loss, and Paige Ouellette drove in the lone run.
The Eagles (18-10, 6-0 NAC) shut out the Beavers twice with 8-0 scores in a doubleheader in Bangor and are still unbeaten in the North Atlantic Conference.
Husson's strong pitching by McKenna Smith, who threw a one-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters, kept the Eagles on track throughout the first game. Kenzie Dore had three hits and drove in four runs. Teagan Blackie also had three hits.
Carleigh Schievink was tagged with the loss for University of Maine at Farmington, giving up seven hits and three earned runs in three innings. Maddie Pike had the lone hit against Smith.
The Eagles used 14 hits in the second game and winning pitcher Danielle Masterson struck out 10 batters and gave up one hit. Julia Gregorie led the Eagles with three hits and drove in four runs.
Lisbon grad Kiley Merritt broke up Masterson's no-hitter in the sixth, while Grace Martin got the start in the circle for the Beavers before being relieved for Schievink in the fourth.
Henry Jamieson was 3 for 4 with three RBI but the Bobcats (12-12, 1-8 NESCAC) lost the second game of a doubleheader with the Hens (17-7, 6-3) 9-7 in Lewiston.
Trinity won the first game 4-2. Jack Brennan and John Nowak each had two hits in the opener.
Northern Vermont-Lyndon (5-17) used a 14-hit attack and received strong pitching from Ryan Alta to sidestep the Beavers (3-20) twice in a doubleheader in Lyndonville, Vermont.
The Hornets won 7-2 and 10-2.
Oxford Hills grad Hunter LaBossiere was one of three UMF batters to record hits in the first game, along with Jameson Bloch and Derek Gendreau.
Bloch added two more hits and drove in both runs in the second game and Nate Coombs doubled for University of Maine at Farmington.
Molly Burdick scored seven goals and Kaitlin Kopcza added four as the Wildcats (2-7, 1-1) slipped away from UMF (0-9, 0-2) with a victory in Farmington.
Ruby McMinis led the Beavers with four goals and teammate Kaya Backman had three.
Hailey Fahey and Kate Coughlin each had a hat trick for the Camels (5-7 overall, 1-7 NESCAC) in the win over the Bobcats (5-9 overall, 1-8 NESCAC) in Lewiston.
Emily Yorns, Greta Panke and Elizabeth Gill each had two goals for Connecticut College.
Caroline Taggart scored three times for Bates while Hanna Matthews and Maddy Roelofs each had a pair of goals. Caroline Keating, Trish Balser and Shelby Howard also scored.
Nidds Violette stopped seven shots for Connecticut College and Cammie Lavoie made five saves for Bates.
Jared Rainville had five goals and five assists to lead the Camels (5-6 overall, 3-5 NESCAC) to top the Bobcats (1-11 overall, 0-9 NESCAC) in New London, Connecticut.
JJ Ford had a hat trick while Liam Horkan and Jack Tenzer each had two goals in the win.
Wil Masterson had three goals for Bates while Connor Hartman, Ben Miller and Alex Horowitz had a goal each.
Will Rice made 11 saves for the Camels and Drew Nyhus had 17 saves for the Bobcats.
