College roundup: Former Edward Little, Lewiston standouts earn all-conference honors
May 6—Edward Little graduate Taylor Depot was one of five University of New England softball players named to All-Commonwealth Coast Conference teams this week.
Depot, a senior shortstop, was chosen for the all-conference second team. She batted .297 with a team-high three triples and eight doubles, which ranked second on the Nor'easters. She also scored 16 runs and stole four bases. On defense, she had a .935 fielding percentage.
This is Depot's second all-conference honor. She was named to the All-CCC first team following the 2019 season. Three of her teammates received first-team nods this season — Abby Miner (Saco), Makenzy Herron and Kate Wilmot — and Grace Tutt (East Waterboro) was picked for the third team.
Lewiston graduate Gemma Landry made Mitchell College history by being the softball program's first player to earn both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors from the New England Collegiate Conference in the same season. Landry shared Co-Player of the Year honors in the league this season.
Landry has batted a team-high .465 with 13 doubles, two triples, three homers, 20 RBIs and 41 runs scored in 38 games. She leads the NECC in runs and total hits (60) and also ranks second in batting average and on-base percentage (.504).
Morgan Moulton and Madison Day, an Oxford Hills garduate, each doubled home two runs, and second-seeded Southern Maine stayed alive in the double-elimination Little East Conference softball tournament with a 6-2 win Thursday night against sixth-seeded Plymouth State in Mansfield, Connecticut.
Moulton gave the Huskies (24-15) a 2-0 lead in the second inning, and Day's double in the third inning made it 4-0. Day scored on a bunt single by Lauren Merrill, another former Oxford Hills standout.
Moulton also was the winning pitcher, holding Plymouth State to five hits.
USM dropped into the losers' bracket earlier Thursday when third-seeded UMass Dartmouth overcame a 6-0 deficit to beat the Huskies, 11-6.
Day's three-run double highlighted a six-run second inning for USM, which plays another elimination game Friday afternoon against Castleton State.
Lewiston grad Jayden Wilson was named to the All-North Atlantic Conference first team as a member of the Maine Maritime Academy squad that won the conference tournament championship.
The senior has 50 goals and 36 assists — both rank first on the team — for 86 points.
Bates College senior Jordyn Tveter capped off her collegiate career by being named Second Team All-NESCAC, as the conference announced its honors Thursday.
Tveter is the first Bates women's player to earn All-NESCAC honors since Camille Belletete in 2017.
The midfielder led the Bobcats with 58 draw controls, and was fourth in the conference with 4.08 per game. Tveter was also second on the team with 20 goals and third in ground balls (19) and caused turnovers (nine).
Tom Vesosky's two-run single capped a four-run second inning, and Arlo Pike later added a two-run homer as the Huskies (22-16) defeated the Bobcats (7-26) in Lewiston.
Lisbon grad Lucas Francis got the win in relief, allowing five hits and one earned run in 4 2/3 innings. Oxford Hills grad Janek Luksza scored on Vesosky's second-inning single and he also drove in a run of his own in the sixth.
Tyler Attal drove in two runs and Kevin Lucey went 3 for 4 for Bates.
