College roundup: Jillian Richardson takes ninth, sets school record at NCAA championships
Mar. 11—Bates College senior Jillian Richardson placed ninth in the 3,000-meter run at the NCAA Division III indoor track and field championships in Birmingham, Alabama.
Richardson, who is from Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School, finished one spot away from earning All-America status, which goes to the top eight finishers. Richardson earned All-America honors twice in cross country, the only Bates runner do so.
Richardson's time of 9 minutes, 37.73 seconds is a personal record and a new Bates record, surpassing the 9:43.31 run by Jessica Wilson in 2017.
Harrison Ike had six goals and an assist as the Hens (1-2, 1-1 NESCAC) topped the Bobcats (0-3, 0-2) in Hartford, Conn.
Ryan Werner had three goals and three assists for Trinity, while Andrew Bailey scored three goals. Will Masterson had four goals and two assists for Bates.
The Amcats (1-2) scored three goals in 55 seconds with less than three minutes left to edge the Beavers (0-1) in Paxton, Massachusetts.
Abby Trefsger scored with 1:52 left to draw University of Maine at Farmington within one goal, but the Beavers couldn't score another in dropping their season opener.
Trefsger and Ruby McMinis each tallied a hat trick — with McMinis also chipping in two assists — Kaya Backman netted two goals, Oxford Hills grad Ashlee Farrar scored her first collegiate goal and Emma Bourget added a goal and an assist. Kate Nowell made eight saves in goal for the Beavers.
Winthrop native and St. Dom's grad Raegan Hachey scored a hat trick for the Amcats, including the first of the three-straight goals late on the fourth. Riley Cote also scored three goals.
Molly McGuckin had four goals and an assist, while Casey Ward added three goals and the Bantams (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) cruised past the Bobcats (2-3, 0-2) in Lewiston.
Lauren Wong and Annie Lowenstein each scored for Bates.
The Beavers (1-1) opened their season with a doubleheader split against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (4-2) in Davenport, Florida.
MCLA won the opener 9-7, while UMaine-Farmington took the second game 5-4.
UMF's Ryan Sargent homered in the fourth to break a 3-3 tie, and Nate Coombs drove in Jacob Kately in the fifth for an insurance run.
Oxford Hills graduate Hunter LaBossiere's two-run single in the second put the Beavers up 3-2.
Will Harriman struck out five in 5 2/3 innings and earned the win. Anthony Boyle recorded a save by holding the Trailblazers scoreless over an 1 1/3 inning.
Austin Rachiele homered for MCLA.
In the opening game, three runs in the second and six in the third were all the Trailblazers needed.
Michael Wormuth hit a three-run homer in the second and a two-run single in the third.
UMF's Sargent hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Sam Parsell hit a three-run home run in the third to put the Beavers up 5-3 before MCLA's big inning.
Ian Perturtz led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a home run and the Terrapins (7-7) beat the Black Bears (3-8) in College Park, Maryland.
Maine loaded the bases in the top of the eighth and the top of the ninth, but was unable to score either time.
Myles Sargent had two hits, including a double and a home run, scored twice and drove in two runs for Maine.
The Beavers (0-1) were blanked in their season opener in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Emma Lapoint homered, doubled and drove in four runs for the Lancers (1-1).
Morgan Keefe, Bella Gasbarro and Naraylee Baez added two hits apiece. Keefe and Brynna Meeker each had triples.
Maddie Pike led UMaine-Farmington with two hits, including a double.
Jillian Taylor had two hits, three RBI and scored twice as the Aggies (11-7) beat the Black Bears (4-11) in Fresno, California.
Izzy Nieblas had an RBI double for Maine.
Hannah Hughbanks drove in three runs to help the Trailblazers (14-6) beat the Black Bears (4-12) in Fresno, California.
