College roundup: UMaine-Farmington tops UMPI, advances to NAC final in men's basketball
Feb. 18—FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team kept its NCAA tournament hopes alive and secured one more home game this season with an 86-74 win over UMaine-Presque Isle in the North Atlantic Conference East Division final Saturday.
Terion Moss paced the top-seeded Beavers (19-7 overall, 14-1 NAC) with 33 points in the win over the third-seeded Owls (13-14 overall, 8-7).
Kyle Donlin netted 21 points for UMaine-Farmington, while Nathan Poulin had 16 points.
Griffin Guerrette led University of Maine at Presque Isle with 24 points. Dany Harris had 15 points and Parker Onorato was right behind him with 14 points.
The Beavers now advance to the NAC championship game next Saturday at 1 p.m. in Farmington. UMaine-Farmington will face NAC West champion SUNY Delhi, which beat SUNY Cobleskill 83-76 in overtime Saturday in the West Division final. The Broncos beat the Beavers 85-63 in Delhi, New York, in the two teams' lone meeting this season. That was UMaine-Farmington's lone conference loss this season.
The University of Maine jumped out to a 10-point lead and held on to beat Albany 74-72 to clinch a spot in the America East playoffs on Saturday in Orono.
Kellen Tynes had 23 points, six rebounds, four assists and seven steals for the Black Bears, who improved to 11-15 overall and 5-8 in the conference.
With the win, Maine assured itself of a spot in the conference tournament for the first time since 2020 and eliminated Albany (7-22, 2-12).
Gedi Juozpaitis scored 17 points for Maine, while Ja'Shonte Wright-McLeish had 11.
DaKquan Davis had 26 points, including six 3-pointers, for Albany.
Mia Holtze led the No. 2 Ephs (19-7 overall, 8-2 NESCAC) with 16 points in a win over the No. 7 Bobcats (13-12 overall, 5-5 NESCAC) in a NESCAC quarterfinal game in Williamston, Massachusetts.
Maddy Mandyck had 15 points, Arianna Gerig dropped in 14 and Cortland McBarron had 11 points for Williams.
Mandyck had 12 rebounds.
Alexandra Long led Bates with 19 points and Meghan Graff chipped in with 11 points. Graff finishes her Bates career with a program-record 1,645 points.
The Warriors (8-24-2, 5-20-2 Hockey East) scored twice in the third period to beat the Black Bears (15-17-2, 12-13-2) in Orono.
Ava Stevenson scored for Maine, while Brooklyn Oakes had 20 saves.
