COLLEGE SPORTS BRIEFS: LCU ends tied for fifth at King Alfred Invite

TYLER — Despite falling in match play, the Lubbock Christian University women's golf team shot the third-lowest 54-hole total in program history, finishing tied for fifth at the King Alfred Spring Invite that concluded Tuesday.

LCU shot a 316 in the final round at the Cascades Golf Club, finishing with an 85-over, 937 score. The Lady Chaps tied with Rogers State, and finished four strokes above LSC rival Cameron, and 49 strokes above Arkansas-Monticello.

LCU's Alexandra Escamilla tied for 13th at 13 over par. Lily Griffin finished right behind Escamilla, shooting 14-over. Griffin improved by two strokes in the final round, shooting a 5-over 76. Her 227 total is tied with Anna Schopp and Shelbye Hill for the sixth-lowest 54-hole in program history.

In match play, the Lady Chaps lost to St. Mary's 3-1-1 in the third-place match. Griffin tied with Libby Killbride, as the pair both shot 76s. Hammond picked up the lone win for LCU, as her 79 was better than Orla O'Leary's 82.

Host and No. 23 UT Tyler won the match-play championship, defeating Rogers State 4-1. Angelo State won the team championship in a playoff over St. Mary's, as both teams finished the week at 36 over par for three rounds. Maria Sierra Sanz of ASU won the individual title, shooting 1-over.

The Lady Chaps will close out the regular season at the Cal State San Marcos Spring Invitational on March 27-28.

LCU men’s soccer

A familiar face will be roaming the sidelines of the LCU Soccer & Track Facility this fall, as Alistair Caldwell is slated to join the Lubbock Christian men's soccer staff as an assistant coach/goalkeepers coach.

The official announcement was made Tuesday.

Caldwell joins the coaching staff while remaining the head girls soccer coach at Coronado. In a little over six years as the head coach, Caldwell has led the program to five district titles, four bi-district, four area round, four regional quarterfinals and three regional tournament appearances. He amassed record of 124-34-10.

In his 10 years coaching both the boys and girls programs, Caldwell has been named district coach of the year six times. Last season he was picked to represent Region I girls in the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches All Star Game in San Antonio.Caldwell has been a part of training West Texas goalkeepers in the Lubbock area for the past 13 years. In 2012, he started Caldwell Goalkeeping Academy in Lubbock, training over 40 local goalkeepers. In 2022, he was brought on as the Director of Goalkeepers for FC Dallas WTX.The Kilmaurs, Scotland native, came through the youth ranks of Kilmarnock FC and represented Scotland at U15 and U18 levels. Professionally he spent time as backup goalkeeper for Ayr United in the Scottish First Division while being part of the youth academy.Caldwell was LCU's starting goalkeeper and captain for the program's first year in 2010, when the Chaps finished 10-5-2. Caldwell was the starting keeper for LCU in its first game in program history, a 3-1 victory over University of the Southwest. He also recorded the first program's first shutout on Sept. 1, 2010, in a 1-0 win over McMurry.

BULLARD — The Chaps closed out play at the King Alfred Spring Invite, finishing ninth overall.

The Chaps improved by one stroke between the second and third rounds, shooting a 27-over, 311 today to finish with an 85-over, 937. For the week, LCU had the third-most pars of any team in the field, finishing with 175.

Braxton Floyd improved by two strokes in the final round, shooting a four-over 75. He finishes the week with a 16-over, 229, and tied for 28th individually. He led the Chaps with six birdies, including two in the final round.

Hayden Bowman also shot a four-over 75 in the final round, improving by four strokes. Bowman finished the week in 31st place with an 18-over, 231 score.

No. 20 Cameron won the team championship, shooting a 14-over, 866 three-round score. Sangha Park of Texas Permian Basin won the individual championship, shooting an eight-under, 205.

The Chaps close out the regular season at the DBU Men's Classic that starts April 3 in Denton.
