Trey Wolff provided another clutch kick last week.

And after he nailed a 35-yard game-winner in overtime to down Oklahoma, the Texas Tech senior place kicker was named the Big 12 Conference Special Teams Player of the Week — his third time receiving the honor this season.

Wolff etched his name into Red Raider lore, for the second time, by knocking in the game-winning field goal in overtime to power the Red Raiders to a 51-48 victory over Sooners. It marked the first time Texas Tech defeated OU since 2011. And it helped the Red Raiders beat the Sooners and Texas — needing a Wolff kick in overtime — in the same season for the first time in program history.

He finished the OU win going 3-for-3 which increased his makes to 18 while also notching 39 in his career — the eighth most in program history.

Texas Tech women’s basketball

Make it back-to-back weeks the Lady Raiders have a player earn a conference accolade.

After averaging 17 points and seven rebounds in back-to-back wins in the Las Vegas Invitational, Jasmine Shavers was tabbed as the Big 12 Freshman of the Week.

In her first career start, Shavers finished with 21 points and seven rebounds to propel the Lady Raiders to a 78-66 win over Mercer to conclude the Las Vegas Invitational with a 2-0 mark. This occurred after a 13-point, seven rebound performance in a win over Middle Tennessee.

A week prior, Bailey Maupin was named the Freshman of the Week. The Gruver native scored a career-best 27 points in a win over Mercer last Saturday.

Wayland Baptist women’s basketball

Wayland Baptist’s Kaitlyn Edgemon has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Edgemon, a 5-foot-11 pandemic-sophomore forward from Littlefield, was recognized after helping the No. 11 Flying Queens to a split of their two games against NCAA Division II competition at the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Colorado State-Pueblo. Wayland defeated the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, 73-65, before falling to CSU-Pueblo, 77-56.

Against UCCS, Edgemon matched her season-high with 26 points, hitting 9-of-16 from the field – including one 3-pointer – and 7-of-9 free throws. Against CSU-Pueblo, Edgemon scored 10 points. In the two games combined, she logged eight rebounds, three assists and a steal.

This is the first SAC Player of the Week for Edgemon, who becomes the second Flying Queen honored with the weekly honor this season. Jenna Cooper-Jackson was recognized for the week of Oct. 24-30. That was her third such honor after two recognitions last season.

Edgemon, the SAC Freshman of the Year in 2020-21 and All-SAC Third Team last season, has scored 816 career points.

The Flying Queens (5-3) return to SAC play this week, hosting Southwestern Christian at 6 p.m. Thursday and No. 23 Mid-America Christian at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Texas Tech men’s tennis

Head coach Danny Whitehead announced his resignation via social media late Monday.

Whitehead, who was in his third year at the helm, stated the decision was ”based solely on what is best for me an my family,” in a graphic posted to Twitter.

“After much thought and reflection, I’ve come to the decision that the demands of this position are not viable for me long term as it relates to time with my wife and two young children as well as my mental health. As the topic of mental health continues to be a much-needed conversation nationally, it’s important to note that it affects people in all walks of life, including coaches.

“I can’t thank Kirby (Hocutt, athletic director) and his staff enough for this opportunity and their support as I move into a new career path.”

Whitehead amassed a 39-25 career record during his tenure. During that span, he also guided Texas Tech to two NCAA Championship appearances (2021-22) in the only two years the postseason tournament was conducted. The Red Raiders advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship in 2021 following an opening-round win over Virginia Tech.

Michael Breler, in his third season on the staff, has been appointed the interim head coach for the duration of the 2023 spring season, per Texas Tech release. He will be assisted by Parker Wynn, who was promoted from his position as volunteer assistant coach — a role he accepted last spring after a successful playing career as a Red Raider.

“We appreciate Coach Whitehead for his efforts in running a model program the past three seasons,” Hocutt said in the Texas Tech release. “Danny put everything he had into our student-athletes, making them better not only on the court but in life. We wish him and his family well as he transitions away from college tennis.”
