College update: Victor softball alumni making their NCAA marks

The Victor softball team won a state championship in 2018 and four years later, it’s easy to see why.

No fewer than seven players from that team are playing college softball, so let’s check in.

Chloe Whittier is a sophomore outfielder at UMass (19-30) and started all 49 games so far this season. She’s batting .255 with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and is second on the team with 25 RBI while going 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts. UMass played its Atlantic 10 Tournament opener on Wednesday against Saint Joseph’s.

Emily Power is a freshman infielder at the University of Rhode Island (11-35). She started 38 of 42 games and hit 3 doubles with 5 RBI for the Rams, whose season is over.

Sarah Simmons is a senior outfielder at Nazareth College (18-19), where she started all 37 games and batted .397 with a team-best 10 doubles, 2 home runs and 30 RBI. The Golden Flyers ended their season last Friday with a loss to St. John Fisher in the Empire 8 Tournament.

Paige Phillips is a senior infielder/pitcher at Elizabethtown College (14-24). She batted .373 as a started in 23 of 29 games with 9 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 16 RBI while pitching a team-high 119.1 innings. She posted an earned-run average of 3.23, striking out 72 batters for an 8-12 season record for the Blue Jays, whose season ended on April 30.

Katie Sidare is a sophomore outfielder at Gannon University (19-18). She batted .278 as a started in all 26 games and was second on the team with 17 RBI. The Golden Knights ended their season on May 5 with a PSAC Tournament loss to Shippensburg.

Reagan Gensiejewski is a senior outfielder at Hillsdale College (31-20), where she played in 40 games and batted .242 with 4 doubles and 12 RBI while leading the team with 12 stolen bases. The Chargers finished their season last Saturday with a loss in the G-MAC Tournament but is celebrating its first regular-season conference title in 29 years.

Maya Thompson is a freshman infielder at Albany (23-15) but not make it into a game this season.

Sophomore pitcher Dom Trippi (Honeoye) has appeared in 5 games for the Army baseball team, allowing 4 hits in 3 innings with a pair of strikeouts. The Black Knights (27-21) open play in the Patriot League Tournament against Holy Cross on Saturday … Emily Hawryschuk (Victor) earlier this season broke the all-time goals record at Syracuse University, breaking the record of 260 set by current coach Kayla Traynor from 2013-16. The Orange (13-5) open their NCAA Tournament on Friday against Fairfield and Hawryschuk, enters as SU’s second-leading scorer with 83 points on 60 goals and 23 assists in 18 games …. Finger Lakes Community College baseball coach Sean Marren recently passed retired coach Bob Lowden’s record for most wins in program history. The Lakers defeated Jamestown CC on April 24 to give Marren’s 245th win and recently concluded their regular season on May 5 with a doubleheader sweep of the Ithaca College junior varsity to take a 34-18 record into the upcoming NJCAA Region III tournament … Also at Finger Lakes CC, Giovanni Ventura (Geneva) won the 10,000 event at the NJCAA Region III championships on April 30. His win helped the Lakers win the team title at the event, while the FLCC women finished fourth. Leah Lloyd (Palmyra-Macedon) won four events for the Lakers (3,000 steeplechase, 800, 1,500 and 5,000) to win Athlete of the Meet honors. The FLCC women also had Morgan Collazo (Victor) win the shot put and discus. Both teams will compete at the NJCAA Division III national championships this weekend at Hudson Valley CC in Troy …

Freshman long-stick midfielder Jackson Nieman (Canandaigua) played in 5 games this season for Stevens Tech men’s lacrosse team (12-7), which opened its NCAA Division III Tournament schedule on Wednesday against Maritime College … Senior midfielder Zack Estabrooks (Victor) played in all 18 games this spring at at Seton Hill (12-6), which opened its NCAA Division III Tournament schedule on Wednesday at defending national champion Le Moyne. Estabrooks had 30 goals and 5 assists for 35 points. Also at Seton Hill, sophomore midfielder Grady Arnold (Palmyra-Macedon) played in 15 games and had 12 goals and 3 assists for 15 points … Junior midfielder Emma Arnold (Palmyra-Macedon) has started all 18 games this spring for the defending Division II national champion Lindenwood College women’s lacrosse team (15-4). Arnold has 22 goals and 19 assists for 41 points, 29 draw controls, 25 ground balls and a team-high 28 caused turnovers for the Lions, who open their NCAA Tournament schedule on Friday at the University of Indianapolis … Junior defender Clancy Rheude (Canandaigua) transferred to the University of Maryland after 2 seasons at Albany but did not play this spring after tearing her ACL in February. The Terps are 17-1 and open their NCAA Division I Tournament schedule on Sunday against the winner of Friday’s game between Duke and Johns Hopkins. Also at Maryland, sophomore attacker LaRen Blakesley (Canandaigua) played in 3 games …

Sophomore attacker Lexi Braniecki (Canandaigua) started 15 of 18 games for the Niagara University women’s lacrosse team and finished third in team scoring with 48 points (35-11) and also won 34 draw controls. Also for the Purple Eagles (9-9), sophomore midfielder Andra Savage (Palmyra-Macedon) played in all 18 games and had 17 goals and 8 assists for 25 points … At RIT, senior attacker Aldyn Savage (Palmyra-Macedon) was named to the All-Liberty League All-Star team as an honorable mention. Savage led the Tigers (5-10) with 50 points (34-16) and set an RIT record with 99 draw controls … Junior attacker Lucy Haggerty (Victor) started all 14 games for the University of Rochester women’s lacrosse team and finished second in team scoring with 32 points (6-26) for the Yellowjackets (5-9) while also winning 38 draw controls … Sophomore attacker Emily Griffin (Canandaigua) played in 7 games for the William Smith women’s lacrosse team and had 9 points (4-5). The Herons open their NCAA Division III Tournament schedule on Sunday at home against Messiah University … Junior infielder Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua) played in 15 games for the SUNY Cortland baseball team and batted .308 in 13 at-bats with 1 double and 3 RBI. The Red Dragons (30-10) open SUNYAC play on Thursday against SUNY Brockport.
