College wrestling: Jones leads Ridgewater at RCTC tournament

Nov. 6—ROCHESTER — The Ridgewater wrestling team had two wrestlers place in the top eight in the season-opening Yellowjacket Open hosted by Rochester Community and Technical College on Saturday.

The Warriors' top finish came from 197-pound sophomore Rick Jones. He placed sixth after going 3-2 with a pair of falls. Jones is a Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg grad from De Graff.

At heavyweight, freshman Austin Schlangen placed eighth for Ridgewater. He was 3-2 with three pins. Schlangen is from Watkins and is an Eden Valley-Watkins alum.

Outside of Ridgewater, three other wrestlers with area ties competed at the Yellowjacket Open:

* St. Cloud State redshirt freshman Tyson Meyer (Minnewaska) placed third at 184 with a 3-1 record.

* Augustana freshman Coy Gunderson (KMS) went 5-1 and finished sixth at 165.

* Minnesota West freshman Joe Kallevig (Willmar) went 1-2 at 165.

Ridgewater returns to action Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, South Dakota.
