College wrestling: No. 21 Northern State downs Minnesota State, Moorhead
No. 21 Northern State bounced back after dropping a dual with No. 10 Augustana and downed Minnesota State University, Moorhead 21-18 Sunday in Moorhead.
Northern's Landen Fischer opened the dual with an 11-4 decision victory over Clayson Mele at 125 pounds.
But the Wolves (7-1, 3-1) Moorhead (0-4, 0-3) 9-3 after three matches and heading into the 149-pound match. That's where Northern found its footing.
Northern's Kolton Roth would pick up a 12-2 majority decision over Gunnar Mogen to get the Wolves going. While a majority decision typically scores four team points, after the match, the Wolves lost a point due to unsportsmanlike conduct.
Wyatt Turnquist would continue the Northern success with a decision at 157, pushing the Wolves lead to 10-9.
At 165, Northern's Tyson Stoebner dropped a majority decision, to push the Dragons' lead to 13-10.
The Wolves would answer with three straight wins, including decisions from Kelby Hawkins and Treyton Cacek and a pin from Marcus Placide. That made it 22-13 in favor of Northern headed into the heavyweight match, which the Wolves lost via forfeit.
Moorhead was also penalized a team point for a control of mat penalty.
Up next, the Wolves take on No. 8 Wisconsin-Parkside inside Wachs Arena at 7 p.m. Friday. The Wolves are in third place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings, while Parkside is fourth.
