New Collinsville store will have big discounts on toys, team gear, household items & more

A new St. Louis-based retailer is close to opening its newest location in Collinsville.

Planet Overstock is a family owned and operated retailer that specializes in overstock goods – excess inventory that is no longer needed or in high demand – that comes from big box stores like Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Costco, Sam’s Club and others.

Located at 501 Beltline Road, Suite 20E, this store is the third location for the family-owned and operated business and the first in Illinois.

Owner Trey Miller said he expects to open the Collinsville store on Black Friday, Nov. 24.

Everything at Planet Overstock is heavily discounted. The average discount is 50% off of retail, according to Miller.

If the discounts aren’t enough to get you in the door, Miller also ordered 500 custom cookies to give out on opening day.

I paid a visit to the new store to meet with Miller and get a sense of what Planet Overstock is about.

Having seen the store, still in the process of unpacking and setting up all the merchandise, I have to say that folks are in for a real treat (and I’m not just talking about the cookies).

The merchandise

I saw for myself that there’s already a lot of great stuff to be found at Planet Overstock. (Miller expects more inventory shipments to arrive before the grand opening.)

The vast majority of items are toys and games for kids (big kids like me included).

Planet Overstock has puzzles, games, dolls, LEGO, Barbie, Cocomelon figures and Fisher-Price Mega Bloks.

Planet Overstock carries a wide variety of toys, including Barbie dolls and accessories.

Other items included Marvel-themed games and figures, Funko Pop figures and Grogu (Baby Yoda) dolls. There are also quite a few figures from the National Entertainment Collectibles Association (NECA) like ALF and Marty McFly from “Back to the Future.”

I admit, I geeked out a little. OK, maybe a lot.

Side note: Collectors will be glad to hear that Miller will also purchase items. The catch is that everything has to be new, in good condition and still sealed in the box.

Aside from toys, Planet Overstock also has ballcaps, knitted hats and other items for the St. Louis Cardinals and Blues, Kansas City Chiefs, even the Chicago Bears (No judgment here. Well, only a little.)

Other sporting goods include golf bags and gloves and camping gear.

Shoppers will find office supplies, pet toys and supplies, baby items, toiletries and household goods like bedding – sheet sets, comforters, pillows – kitchenware and appliances, power tools, patio furniture, towels, TVs, and home décor.

Need a 40-ounce Stanley tumbler? Done.

Even the occasional odd (and I mean that in a good way) item can be found. If your home needs an Elvis thermometer, you can currently find it at Planet Overstock.

Now, all that being said, there’s no guarantee how long any of these items will last. Miller said most items tend to sell quickly.

“Better things are coming”

Miller also said new shipments are coming in all the time, and the inventory changes a lot each week, which he finds exciting.

“Every time you’re here … every two weeks, the store will look completely different,” said Miller.

He said he can potentially get “anything and everything.” However, he wouldn’t be able to order the same merchandise, even if he wanted to. What the store carries depends on what’s available to him at the time.

Miller said there will be a two-month period when a lot of popular items become available. When the big box stores replace off-season inventory, he can order those goods for Planet Overstock.

Photos of new inventory will be posted on the store’s Facebook page, according to Miller.

One piece of wall art décor at the shop read, “Better things are coming.” And it’s true for Planet Overstock customers.

In addition to the discounts already applied to the awesome merch at Planet Overstock, shoppers can save even more via a coupon program.

Miller said they send out weekly coupons, which are good for about a week before the next one is sent.

To receive these coupons, text “Planet” to 1-877-619-6014.

The store has a 30-day return policy, which some discount retailers and liquidators may not offer. As long as you have the receipt, you are good to go.

“We stand behind everything we sell,” said Miller, who acknowledges that things happen and an item might be defective or broken.

About Planet Overstock

Miller’s family opened its first overstock store prior to the pandemic.

This store, Metro Overstock, was located inside the family’s Foodland grocery store at 5401 Collinsville Road in Fairmont City.

Both Metro Overstock and Foodland have since closed.

Miller described Metro Overstock as a “test store” to see how it was received by the public.

The store did well enough that the family was comfortable opening the first Planet Overstock store – the Lemay store – in June 2022.

The Festus store opened last December and is the biggest store at a whopping 15,000 square feet.

Miller said they tend to hire within the family. His dad runs the Lemay store, his mom helps part-time at all of the stores, and his aunt will work at the Collinsville store.

Miller said he hopes the new store will bring in previous Metro customers.
