Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Colony Credit Real Estate, it has a TSR of 121% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Colony Credit Real Estate shareholders have gained 121% (in total) over the last year. That's including the dividend. What is absolutely clear is that is far preferable to the dismal 13% average annual loss suffered over the last three years.
