New Colorado-based candle company opens shop in downtown Sioux Falls

A new candle business has opened up in downtown Sioux Falls.

Co-owners Jeremy Nosbush and Tyler Pate opened their first MatchBox Candle Co. location in Monument, Colorado, in June 2021. Their second location in Colorado Springs opened in April. Their newest location opened October 1 here in Sioux Falls.

While the couple still lives in Colorado, they decided to open their third store here because it's where Nosbush grew up.

“I always thought Phillips Avenue would do great for a shop like this. It's something unique and different that downtown doesn't necessarily have yet,” Nosbush said. “And my family still lives here, too, so they’re excited to help out and have us be able to visit more. It’s a good home base for another location.”

The 124 S. Phillips Avenue location used to be 605 Running, which moved to a new space in September.

Nosbush and and Pate started candle making as a hobby, giving them as gifts to friends and families. Once people kept coming back for more, they realized they could make a real business out of it.

“Before we knew it, we had an online store and were signing up for farmers markets and craft shows. We got a really good local following and knew that people were really enjoying our candles,” Nosbush said.

From candle scents to classes, what MatchBox Candle Co. offers

All the candles are made in-store from 100% natural soy wax, which is clean-burning and doesn’t leave black soot.

They currently have 24 different scents, including Glazed Lemon Bread, Coffee Bean Crunch, Tomato Leaf, Settler’s Cabin, Lavender Lemonade, Caramel Corn and Tropical Stone Fruit.

“I like to say we have a pretty eclectic collection of scents,” Nosbush said. “There’s something for everyone.”

In addition to candles, the store sells wax melts and hand soap, and they also have local artists display and sell their own work and products. Right now, MatchBox is featuring 16 local vendors, but they're always looking for more.

MatchBox also hosts candle making workshops for people to pour their own candles. Nosbush said it’s a great opportunity for people wanting to do something unique with family or friends. He also said it's fun for birthday or bachelorette parties and can be a good team-building activity for businesses.

Workshops are about an hour long and can take place any day of the week. People can call ahead or go online to register for a class.

“We’re really excited to be a part of Sioux Falls,” Nosbush said. “It's a really up-and-coming area with a lot of growth happening downtown, and we really have a great community.”

And the growth doesn’t stop here, he said. The couple is already looking for the next opportunity and where they want to open a store next.

For now, the Sioux Falls store is hiring part time. Customers can find MatchBox Candle Co. online, where they offer free shipping, or on the company’s Facebook page.
