This is Mars. We're here in our place that we're going to be exploring over the next months and coming years.”Scientists hope to extract samples from Martian rock for future analysis back on Earth - the first such specimens ever collected by humankind from another planet.

  • A quick COVID test that plugs into your phone

    Researchers at the University of Lille in France are developing a new portable COVID test that could provide results in just 10 minutes. The prototype CorDial-1 test is the size of a large USB stick and can be plugged into a smartphone.Professor Sabine Szunerits explains: "Somebody has to take a nasal swab of you, you will put the sample directly on the electrode, you can put the telephone on the table, you can have a coffee, some ice cream, even a shower and ten minutes later you come back."The test works by using tiny antibody particles from the camelids - an animal family which includes llamas, camels, and alpacas. The nanobodies are grafted onto the surface of an electrode. When they come into contact with the COVID-19 virus ‘spike’ protein, the change in electrical current shows up as a signal on a graph on your phone."You start up your mobile phone, a signal will appear, and depending on the height of the signal, you can say if you're COVID positive or negative."Other quick and portable COVID-19 tests also exist, but some scientists have raised doubts about their reliability.The CorDial-1 test is yet to be approved for use.But initial trials show a 90% accuracy rate compared to the trusted PCR tests, which take longer to deliver results and need lab conditions.The next phase of the project is to run a three-month trial on more than 1,000 people before manufacturing the device.

    HSBC is betting on a new strategy after its earnings took a tumble. Europe's biggest bank said Tuesday (February 23) that profits fell by just over a third last year. They dropped to $8.78 billion in 2020 as the global health crisis took a toll. That was down from over $13 billion the year before. The lender cited low interest rates and tough market conditions, and cut its target for return on equity. HSBC now plans big cuts in back office functions, such as technology. It didn't put a number on any job cuts, which would come after it shed 11,000 posts last year. Now the bank is betting on rich Asians to turn things around. It's pumping investment into wealth management in Greater China and the wider region. Underperforming units in Europe and North America may be sold off. HSBC confirmed it's in talks over a sale of its French retail banking arm. And it says it's 'exploring options' over its U.S. retail franchise. HSBC shares fell over one percent from the open in London.

    Malaysian immigration authorities said Tuesday they have deported 1,086 Myanmar migrants, breaking a court order to halt their repatriation following an appeal by two human rights groups. Just hours earlier, a high court granted a one-day stay order for the deportation of 1,200 Myanmar migrants to hear an appeal by Amnesty International Malaysia and Asylum Access Malaysia, which said refugees, asylum-seekers and minors were among those being sent back.

  • Defying court, Malaysia deports Myanmar nationals

    Malaysia has defied a court order to halt the deportation of Myanmar nationals, sending 1,086 people back to their homeland.The Myanmar citizens were sent back on Tuesday on three navy ships sent by the country's military, which seized power in a Feb. 1 coup. Malaysia had initially said it would deport 1,200 Myanmar citizens. It also vowed not to deport Rohingya Muslims or refugees registered with the U.N. High Commission for Refugees - or UNHCR. But the agency has said at least six people registered with it are among the deportees. Refugee groups also say asylum seekers from the minority Chin, Kachin, and non-Rohingya Muslim communities are also fleeing conflict and persecution at home and they are among those being deported. Malaysia's Immigration Department Director-General said the repatriated Myanmar citizens did not include Rohingya refugees or asylum-seekers.He said, quote, "all those returned had agreed to be sent back voluntarily without being forced by any party." He did not respond to queries on why the repatriation was carried out despite the halt ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court. The court had granted a stay until 10 a.m. on Wednesday local time, when it was scheduled to hear an application by rights groups for a judicial review to suspend the deportation.Those deported had been detained for immigration offences. Malaysia does not formally recognize refugees, treating them as undocumented migrants.The Southeast Asian nation is home to more than 154,000 asylum seekers from Myanmar.
