Colorado City rest stop south of Pueblo temporarily closed for plumbing, sidewalk repairs

A Colorado City rest area and stop on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Trinidad to Pueblo Bustang Outrider route has temporarily closed for plumbing and street repairs.

CDOT on Tuesday announced it closed the Cuerno Verde-Colorado City Rest Area at the Interstate 25 bypass and Colorado State Highway 65 interchange in Colorado City to perform plumbing repairs and upgrade the facility's sidewalks, courtyard and landscaping. The closure took effect at 9 a.m. Tuesday and is expected to last until 5 p.m. on Aug. 23.

The rest area also serves as a bus stop for CDOT’s Trinidad to Pueblo Bustang Outrider route that was launched earlier this year. During the closure, the bus will skip this stop and travel continuously between Walsenburg and Pueblo. Fares for the route are free through August.

Other commuters traveling southbound can instead access the El Moro Rest Area near Trinidad until the Cuerno Verde-Colorado City Rest Area reopens.

The scope of the plumbing repairs at that stop necessitate that the water be shut off so contractors can fix leaking drain lines and repair a drinking fountain that was vandalized, said Bob Wilson, a spokesperson for CDOT. Those repairs may or may not occur during the upcoming closure as CDOT's contractor is waiting for a certain part to arrive, but that shouldn't push back the timeline for reopening, he said.

The walkways leading to the courtyard will be improved to eliminate tripping hazards and “provide a more even path,” Wilson said. Tripping hazards within the courtyard will also be mitigated.

The Cuerno Verde-Colorado City Rest Area is one of two along I-25 between Trinidad and Pueblo. It provides access to restrooms, picnic tables, vending machines, water fountains and more.

The north and southbound Pinon rest areas between Pueblo and Fountain on I-25 have been closed since March 2020.
