Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has announced the first five winners of $50,000 scholarships in a program designed to encourage students to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
KELLY WERTHMANN: Five Colorado students are a step closer to college because they got vaccinated. This morning, Gov. Polis announced the first five winners of the Colorado Comeback Cash scholarship drawing. Each of the winners will receive $50,000 towards their higher education. It's all part of the state's program to encourage more people to get vaccinated.
GOV. JARED POLIS: We knew that it would give Coloradans who may have just been waiting or on the sidelines an extra reason to go out and get vaccinated. And that's exactly what the 12- to 17-year-olds on this call did. They got vaccinated. They got protected early. They were all pleasantly surprised to hear that they won the $50,000 scholarship.
KELLY WERTHMANN: Well, you'll meet some of the students tonight on CBS4 News at 5:00. 20 more students are going to win a scholarship. The governor is announcing five winners each week for the next four weeks. Those 12 to 17 years old still have a chance if they get vaccinated during that time.
